Notes: X-ray diffraction, positron annihilation, electron microscopy and bulk density measurements are reported as a function of the degree of acetylation for a linters cotton. Heterogeneous reaction proceeds with a retention of ordered structure in the fibers. Substitution does increase the extent of disorder but is not sufficiently extensive to disrupt completely order at the fiber, fibril, micro fibril, and crystallite levels. The generation of disorder is associated with an increase in the interfibrillar distance, a breakup of the microfibrillar structure without a total disruption of the microcrystalline structure.

Notes: The structure and fragmentation of eight [C6H13O] + ions formed by protonation of C6H12O carbonyl compounds in the gas phase have been investigated using isotopic labeling and metastable ion studies to investigate the fragmentation reactions and collisional dissociation studies to probe ion structures. Protonated 3-methyl-2-pentanone and protonated 2-methyl-3-pentanone readily-interconvert by pinacolic-retro-pinacolic rearrangements; the remaining six ions represent stable ion structures, although in many cases fragmentation is preceded by pinacolic-type rearrangements. Unimolecular (metastable ion) fragmentation of the [C6H13O] + species occurs by elimination of H2O, C3H6, C4H8 and C2H4O. The last three elimination reactions appear to occur through the intermediacy of a proton-bound complex of a carbonyl compound and an olefin, with the proton residing with the species of higher proton affinity on decomposition of the complex.

Notes: Isoelectric focusing in the continuous flow mode can be more quickly and economically performed by admitting a stepwise pH gradient composed of simple buffers instead of uniform mixtures of synthetic carrier ampholytes. The time-consuming formation of the pH gradient by the electric field is thereby omitted. The stability of a three-step system with arginine - morpholinoethanesulfonic acid/glycylglycine - aspartic acid is analyzed theoretically by one-dimensional computer simulation as well as experimentally at various flow rates in a continuous flow apparatus. Excellent agreement between experimental and theoretical data was obtained. This metastable configuration was found to be suitable for focusing of proteins under continuous flow conditions. The influence of various combinations of electrolytes and membranes between electrophoresis chamber and electrode compartments is also discussed.
