Notes: The frequency of two newly defined HLA antigens, HLA CT7 and DMA, was found to be greatly increased in patients with psoriasis. These two antigens and those previously found to be associated with the disease, B13, BW16 and BW17, frequently occurred together. The disease may be primarily associated with HLA DMA, or with the HLA haplotypes CT7-B13/W16/W17-DMA.

Notes: Abstract: Movements of southern right whales between Gough Island and South Africa, and between Argentina and Tristan da Cunha, southern Brazil, and South Georgia are documented through matching of six photoidentified individuals. These include the resighting of a male in a mid-oceanic locality some 4,424 km away from (and 11 yr after) its last sighting in a coastal area where it had been seen in six of the preceding eight years, a female photographed in mid-Atlantic resighted with a calf in a coastal nursery area 2,769 km away, resightings of females with calves in different nursery areas 2,051 km apart in different years, and the first example of a link between a coastal nursery area and a feeding ground in high latitudes. The possible implications of these movements for estimates of calving interval and survival rate based on resightings in coastal waters are discussed. The potential for intermingling between populations on either side of the South Atlantic seems greater than was previously considered likely from a comparison of animals photographed in coastal waters.

Notes: Abstract: Several species of cetaceans naturally slough visible quantities of skin. We have investigated the prospect of using this material as a viable alternative to the use of biopsy darts for the collection of samples for molecular analysis. Pieces of skin were collected from free-ranging individuals of three different species—the humpback (Megaptera novaeangliae), sperm (Physeter macrocephalus) and right whales (Eubalaena glacialis). DNA was extracted from 11 pieces of sloughed skin and DNA “fingerprint” profiles prepared. All samples contained DNA of both sufficient quality and quantity for genetic analysis. The applicability of this approach is discussed generally in relation to answering problems about the population structure and breeding systems of cetaceans.

Notes: Electrophoretic variation of Atlantic salmon NADP-isocitrate dehydrogenase in liver extracts of material from Ireland is interpreted in terms of two loci, IDH-A and IDH-B, coding for cytoplasmically-located isozymes. The IDH-A locus is polymorphic with qIDH-A1=0.18 and qIDH-A2=0.82. This polymorphism is of potential value for investigating the population genetics of the two races of Atlantic salmon in Ireland. An additional, monomorphic band which appears in heart extracts may be a mitochondrial enzyme coded by a third locus.

Notes: The enzymatic solubilization of an insoluble alfalfa protein fraction was studied in a batch reactor and in a continuous flow semi-batch membrane reactor. The “white” cytoplasmic protein fraction obtained by heat precipitation was solubilized using the proteolytic enzyme trypsin. Batch studies were carried out at pH 7.7 with a trypsin to substrate ratio of 2 x 10m-3 (by weight). At 27, 37 and 47°C the hydrolysis reaction was found to be first-order in substrate concentration. The activation energy was 23.25 kcal. At 47°C the conversion level was 97% after 4 hr. For the membrane reactor system, the effects of the variables pH, temperature, substrate concentration, and trypsin to substrate ratio were evaluated with the aid of factorial design methods. The optimum operating conditions for the membrane reactor studies were 47°C at pH 7.7 with a trypsin to substrate ratio of 4 x 10-3 at a 0.5% solids concentration level. The hydrolysis process was enhanced if the reactor was operated in a washout mode prior to the addition of enzyme suggesting that soluble low molecular weight inhibitors were washed out of the reactor with the permeate. 55% of the total amount of insoluble starting material appeared as products in the permeate after 4 hr of operation under the conditions stated above.

Notes: Abstract The neurovascular responses to noxious electrically evoked axon reflex (EAR) stimulation and iontophoretic application of endothelium-dependent [acetylcholine (ACh)] and independent [sodium nitrite (NaNO2)] vasodilator substances were examined in human forearm skin using laser Doppler flowmetry, before and after repeated topical applications of the neurotoxin capsaicin (chronic capsaicin pre-treatment). Following 3 or 4 days of capsaicin pre-treatment the normal vasodilator response to acute application of capsaicin was significantly reduced as was the EAR response. There were, however, no significant changes in the vasodilator responses to either ACh or NaNO2, suggesting that the neurogenic axon reflex is in series with the endothelial and microvascular smooth muscle mechanisms of vasodilatation. Recovery of normal EAR occurred within 2–4 weeks of cessation of capsaicin pre-treatment.

Notes: Summary Two studies on the efficacy of mel Cy (Cymelarsan, Rhone Merieux, France) for the treatment of cattle infected withTrypanosoma evansi were carried out with groups of 5 Friesian Holstein calves infected with an Indonesian stock ofT. evansi and treated 14 days after infection. In the first study 3 groups were injected subcutaneously with Cymelarsan at dose rates of 0·125, 0·25 and 0·50 mg/kg and in the second study 2 i/m at 0·50 and 0·75 mg/kg. The response to treatment was monitored parasitologically by daily microhaematocrit centrifugation technique and weekly mouse inoculation. Enzyme linked immunosorbent assays were used to monitor trypanosomal antibodies and trypanosomal antigens in serum samples collected weekly. Relapse infections occurred in all the groups given the drug s/c whilst all the animals treated i/m remained parasitologically negative up to 80 days after treatment. Results from serological assays, however, suggested the possible persistence of trypanosome infection in the animals treated at a dose rate of 0·50 mg/kg i/m although trypanosomes could not be demonstrated parasitologically. A dose rate of 0·75 mg/kg administered i/m is recommended, therefore, for the treatment ofT. evansi infection in Friesian Holstein cattle.
