Notes: The Raman spectra of hydrogen-bonded crystalline HCONH2 and HCOND2 have been measured up to 10 GPa at 300 K in a gasketed diamond anvil cell. The frequencies of the in-plane intermolecular stretching mode which characterizes the hydrogen bond along the zig–zag chain increase with increasing pressure with a slope (dν/dP) of 11.1 cm−1/GPa, and its slope becomes steeper, to 19.2 cm−1/GPa, at about 5.0 GPa (=Pc). The frequencies of the intramolecular ND2 stretching mode decrease with increasing pressure at all pressure range except around Pc where they show an increase of 20 cm−1. It turns out from these results that (1) the hydrogen (deuteron) bonds along the chain direction become stronger in response to the pressure, and their increasing strength are more developed above Pc, and (2) the other type of hydrogen (deuteron) bonds which bridge the chains to make their planar hydrogen-bonded network are weakened around Pc. The pressure-induced phase transition at Pc is discussed by focusing on the behavior of two types of hydrogen bondings and the effect of the interplanar interaction.

Notes: The first continuous wave (cw) operation at room temperature of a GaAlAs short-wavelength distributed feedback (DFB) laser is reported. The cw operation at a wavelength of 759 nm was realized by use of the buried twin-ridge substrate (BTRS) structure which has an excellent current confinement efficiency in the active region. The hybrid liquid phase epitaxy and the metalorganic chemical vapor deposition growth technology were used for the fabrication of short-wavelength GaAlAs DFB BTRS lasers.

Notes: We have developed a new composite-cavity laser with two different waveguide cores connected near the front mirror in the same cladding. This composite cavity has a built-in structure that is capable of giving high mode selectivity because of strongly modulated reflectivity of the front mirror. The laser shows very stable single longitudinal mode operation in a temperature range as wide as about 50 °C for output powers from 3 to 100 mW without mode hopping.

Notes: Brillouin scattering was measured at room temperature in liquid and solid CS2 in a diamond anvil cell up to 70 kbar. In the liquid phase, the acoustic velocity and the refractive index were determined as a function of pressure: The former allowed us to determine the equation of state, ρ=0.206 P0.40+1.144 (1 kbar≤P≤13 kbar) with density ρ in g/cm3 and pressure P in kbar, and the latter was well fitted by the Lorentz–Lorenz relation yielding the pressure-insensitive polarizability of 8.20×10−24 cm3. In the solid phase, the pressure dependence of longitudinal- and transverse-acoustic phonon velocities was determined up to the appearance of black CS2 which was formed at pressures above 70 kbar, and the high optical and elastic anisotropy of crystalline CS2 is discussed.

Notes: Using an immunoelectron microscopic technique we have compared the ulrastructural localization of IgG and complement (C3) in the basement membrane zone of three typical cases of bullous pemphigoid and three atypical variant cases (nodular, polymorphic and localized pemphigoid, respectively). There was no significant difference in the in vivo ultrastructural localization of these immunoreactants between the typical and the atypical cases of pemphigoid. In all cases IgG and C3 were detected between the basilar surface of the basal keratinocytes and the basal lamina. Moreover, the in vitro binding sites of circulating anti-basement membrane zone antibodies were identical in the case of nodular pemphigoid and a typical pemphigoid as control. We also observed that immunoreactants were not deposited beneath melanocytes.

Notes: Abstract The use of ultrasound to detect a response of massive Wilms' tumor to preoperative chemotherapy is demonstrated. Anechoic areas appearing during treatment are highly suggestive of response even in the absence of a reduction in size.

Notes: Summary The purpose of this study was to compare the rates of bone growth with four different surfaces of cobalt-chrome implants. Two of the implant surfaces were coated by a glass-ceramic of our own composition. One coating was porous. No enhancement of bone ingrowth was found in the glass-ceramic implants. The degree of metal ion contamination was also assessed, and significant, potentially harmful contamination by metal ions was found in the glass-ceramic. This study points out the need for better techniques of coating metal with glass-ceramic to avoid potential carcinogenic effects.

Notes: Summary Using low-temperature postembedding techniques for immunoelectron microscopy, we succeeded in demonstrating the precise localization of bullous pemphigoid antigen (BP-Ag) in normal human skin. Small pieces (〈1 mm3) of normal adult skin were rapidly frozen in liquid propane at-190°C and subjected to freeze substitution with 100% methanol at-80°C. Specimens were embedded in Lowicryl K11M at-60°C which was polymerized under ultraviolet radiation at-60°C. Ultrathin sections were incubated with BP sera followed by rabbit anti-human IgG and colloidal-gold conjugated anti-rabbit IgG. Epidermal ultrastructure was generally well preserved: the basal cell plasma membrane and intra- and extracellular components of hemidesmosomes could be resolved. Gold particles were mainly distributed on and around the hemidesmosomes in both intra- and extracellular sites, with most of the labelling being inside the basal keratinocytes and within about 300 nm of the basal plasma membrane. No specific labelling was observed beneath melanocytes or when normal human serum was used as a control instead of BP serum. Our observations indicate that BP-Ag is localized in and around hemidesmosomes in normal human skin and that the antigen has both intracellular and extracellular domains with the major component occurring inside the cells.
