Notes: Abstract Stem chlorenchymatous cells from well-watered and water-stressed plants of Cissus quadrangularis L. were examined to evaluate the effect of drying on cell structure and metabolism. At a stem relative water content as low as 52-58%, cellular integrity was maintained, but some qualitative and quantitative alterations occurred. Chlorophyll coment was higher in stressed plants, and the intact photosynthetic apparatus exhibited an increased degree of thylakoid stacking paralleled by a lower chlorophyll a/h ratio. Overnight malate accumulation was very low. Starch was retained but its day/night fluctuation was practically suppressed. Plastosomes were smaller and fewer, and the range of their daily fluctuation was very reduced. Vacuoles underwent fragmentation and accumulated osmiophilic deposits. The maintenance of the cellular integrity accounts for the ability of C. quadrangularis to recover rapidly from water stress.

Notes: Abstract The only existing photoelectric light curve of AI Cru has been re-analysed using the Wilson and Devinney (1971) direct method of solution. The system is found to be a semi-detached system of spectral type (B5 v+B8 v), with a mass ratioq=m c /m h =0.6. This solution differs somewhat from that obtained by Giuricinet al. (1980), using Wood's (1972) method, but seems more realistic because of the smaller value ofq and the reduced temperature difference between the components, which amounts to about 3300 K.

Notes: Abstract TheB light curve of BF Vir published by Mallama and Witt (1976) has been re-analyzed using the Wilson and Devinney (1971) approach and the absolute dimensions have been computed. The system turns out to be a semi-detached system, with an A2V primary and an evolved G2 undermassive secondary which fills its Roche lobe; the primary, even if detached, is not far from contact.

Notes: Abstract The recently published two-colour photoelectric light curves of the double-lined spectroscopic binaries CD Tauri and BS Draconis have been analysed using the Wilson and Devinney (1971) method of solution. With respect to previous solutions, CD Tau shows small but appreciable differences, while for BS Dra the old elements are confirmed. The absolute elements, computed using Popper's spectroscopic data, show that both binaries have normal Main Sequence components, and the comparison of their relative radii with the Roche lobes allows us to classify them as geometrically detached.

Notes: Abstract TheV andB light curves of the eclipsing binary RU Eridani, published by Sarma and Sanwal (1981), have been analysed by means of the Wilson and Devinney (1971) method, in order to obtain a solution based on the Roche model, as distinct from the Russell and Merrill model, used by Sarma and Sanwal. The system turns out to consist of an evolved K1 secondary which appears to fill the lobe, capable of containing its mass, and of an F0 V primary, which seems almost to fill its own. An estimate of the absolute elements of RU Eri has been made, on the assumption that the primary has a mass corresponding to its spectral type according to Allen (1973).

Notes: Abstract TheV andB light curves of three Algol-type eclipsing binaries (UZ Cyg, VW Cyg, AQ Peg), observed by Ammanet al. (1979), have been analysed using the Wilson and Devinney (1971) model. We find that all of them are semi-detached systems, with A-type primary components and K-type evolved secondary which fill the corresponding lobe, although VW Cyg should perhaps be considered as an sd-d system.

Notes: Abstract The reaction232Th(γ,f) is studied using bremsstrahlungγ-beams in the (5.45–6.85) MeV end point energy range. Fragments angular distributions are measured and yield components with opposite parities are separated. The unfolded cross sections have resonant behaviour which indicates the existence of low damped vibrational states. Furthermore, a near degeneracy forK π =0+ andK π = 0− resonances at ∼5.5 MeV and ∼6 MeV is observed. Data are analysed in terms of a double humped barrier configuration within the doorway state model for fission. For each component maxima with almost equal heights and a shallow intermediate minimum are determined. Moreover almost equal potential barriers withK=0 and opposite parities are found. This is a signature for mass-asymmetric shapes and seems a clear indication for a threehumped barrier configuration with a low inner maximum and a third mass asymmetric shallow minimum due to the fragmentation of the normal mass-asymmetric second maximum.

Notes: Abstract Deep subthreshold photofission data of238U are analysed. Spectroscopic properties of highly deformed states from experiments in the literature are introduced into a model calculation based on the doorway state formalism which is extended to fission at energies as low as the isomeric level. It is shown that starting from the results of a detailed analysis of the photofission measurements near the top of the fission barrier it is possible to describe the process in the energy range covered by the intermediate well in the double-humped deformation potential. In particular, the so-called “shelf effect” in the low energy photofission is reproduced in terms of delayed isomeric fission through a few undamped vibrational states localised in the pairing gap region above the isomer.
