    Notes: Abstract— Preparations of guinea pig brain nuclei, obtained by discontinuous gradient centrifugation in sucrose solutions of pH 6.7–6.8, containing 3 mM-MgCl2 and phosphate exhibited steady and reproducible oxygen uptake. Oxygen uptake was stimulated 60–70 per cent by glucose, pyruvate, oxalacetate or α-ketoglutarate and 267 per cent by succinate. This respiratory activity was unaffected by the relative sodium or potassium ion content of the medium and by variations in the concentration of inorganic phosphate. Agents known to inhibit citric acid cycle oxidation, oxidative phosphorylation and glycolysis diminished oxygen uptake, but antibiotics inhibiting nucleic acid or protein synthesis did not. Treatment of the nuclear preparation with DNase decreased respiratory capacity, which was partially restored by the addition of polyacrylic acid.

    Notes: Abstract Gamma radiations from84m Rb and86m Rb, produced by (n, 2n) reaction on85Rb and87Rb respectively, have been studied using a high resolution Ge(Li) spectrometer. Gamma rays of 216.3±0.25, 248.2±0.25 and 464.5±0.25 keV have been found decaying with 20 min half-life and are assigned to84m Rb. A single gamma ray of 556.1±0.25 keV was found to decay with 62 sec half-life and has been assigned to86m Rb. The results are incorporated into decay schemes for the two isomers.

    Notes: Two-component interpenetrating polymer networks (IPN) of the SIN type (simultaneous interpenetrating networks) were prepared from three different polyurethanes and two epoxies. The linear prepolymers were combined in solution, together with crosslinking agents and catalysts, films cast, and subsequently chain extended and crosslinked in situ. Two of the IPN's showed significant improvement in thermal resistance, as measured by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). All of the IPN's showed maxima in tensile strength significantly higher than the tensile strengths of the component networks at 25% polyurethane and minima at 75% polyurethane. The minima were explained by an initial dilution of the strong polyurethane hydrogen bonds by the epoxies, and the maxima, by an increase in crosslink density due to interpenetration.

    Notes: The polyelectrolyte character of four natural and ten synthetic hymatomelanic acids, synthesized from possible monomers both in the presence and absence of catalysts, was established by means of viscosity measurements. Intrinsic viscosities were evaluated for the purpose of comparison. The number-average molecular weights of some typical natural and synthetic hymatomelanic acids were determined from osmotic pressure measurements. Using the Flory-Fox relationship in an approximate manner, the root-mean-square average end-to-end separations were also evaluated.

    Notes: By utilizing a static method, based on slight modification of the Wilhelmy plate method, the interfacial properties of one natural and two synthetic hymatomelanic acids were studied at both the air-water and oil-water interfaces. On this basis their number-average molecular weights, flexibility and shape of the macromolecular chains at the interface, and the related thermodynamic parameters were evaluated.
