Notes:
Summary It is known that the electrochemical oxidation of methanol and formate is well catalysed by noble-metal alloys. For a systematic study of these effects different Pt and Pd alloys are investigated, (i) by use of the potentiostatic scanning method and (ii) by testing such alloys on active carbon as fuel-cell electrodes. It has been shown, that for the oxidation of formate Pd alloys are particularly suitable and for the oxidation of methanol Pt alloys. Methanol/air batteries using these types of catalysts are in field test for practical application. Difficulties arising from extreme temperature differences can be largely avoided by the use of methanol/formate fuel mixtures. A Pd/Pt catalyst (ratio 4∶1) has been approved for this fuel mixture.
