Notes: Abstract DNA values and chromosome volumes were determined for six species of the coleopteran genus Dermestes which have very similar karyotypes. Large differences in DNA value occur which give no indication of a geometric series. DNA value is approximately proportional to chromosome volume, indicating that the DNA differences lie in the chromosomes. Evidence from the variation in volume of the sex chromosomes, along with the DNA values, cannot be interpreted in terms of a chromosome model with a variable number of strands. DNA values are often at variance with the taxonomic grouping of species within the genus.

Notes: Abstract The distribution of DNA values in some somatic tissues of seven Dermestes species has been investigated. In all cases the DNA values are distributed as members of a doubling series. Distributions are found to be similar between species and sexes for the same tissue but different between tissues in the same species. Species DNA values derived from somatic tissues agree with DNA values previously determined for spermatids. These data are discussed in relation to the range of species DNA values (2.7 x) and the process of differentiation.

Notes: Abstract The sequence of chromosome replication and the extent of RNA transcription were determined for pre-meiotic S-phase and first meiotic prophase in males of Myrmeleotettix maculatus and Chorthippus parallelus. Some heterochromatic chromosome segments are replicated early in S-phase while others are replicated late. In general, heavily condensed heterochromatic regions of the chromosomes show little or no RNA transcription as defined by 3H-uridine incorporation. Extra (i.e. in excess of 2) M4 autosomes in Ch. parallelus are slightly more condensed (heterochromatic) than their two homologues and this change in coiling behaviour is paralleled by a reduction in the rate of transcription and a change in the time of its replication, more of the DNA being synthesised at the end of S-phase. These findings are discussed in relation to the definition of heterochromatin.

Notes: Abstract In tulip anthers meiosis begins first in the pollen mother cells next to the point of entry of the vascular bundle at the base. It then proceeds in a wave to the free end of the anther. The first cells to pass through meiosis have the lowest chiasma frequency and cells with a lower cell chiasma frequency have a lower total bivalent length. It is suggested that some factor which passes through the vascular bundle may cause the developmental variations in chiasma frequency possibly by first altering chromosome length (Summary see p. 179.)
