Notes: Infrared (2–16 μm) emission from Ar Rydberg atoms, excited in a conventional low-pressure microwave discharge plasma, has been observed in the cryogenic COCHISE reactor/spectrometer facility. The observed spectrum is very complex but is identifiable using the detailed energy level structure and optical selection rules for ArI. Detailed transition probabilities for dipole-allowed transitions between 2 and 16 μm were computed using the Coulomb approximation. Comparisons of observed and predicted spectra show that substantial long wavelength infrared (LWIR) emission (∼12 μm) arises from Rydberg states near the ionization limit; these states must have kinetically enhanced populations in order to account for the observed emission intensities. The results are interpreted in terms of a radiative/collisional cascade sequence initiated by dissociative recombination of Ar+2 with energetic electrons in the active discharge.

Notes: Abstract The cellular response in terms of steady-state variance of cell mass concentration to fluctuations in incoming nutrient concentration to a chemostat has been examined. A white noise process is assumed to describe incoming nutrient concentration fluctuations and the variance of cell mass concentration has been found to depend on cell yield (a lumped measure of nutrient concentration fluctuation magnitude and lifetime) and two system time constants.

Notes: Abstract The extent of lithium and potassium uptake by bothα- andβ-Ni(OH)2 electrodes has been studied by atomic absorption/emission spectroscopy. It was found that lithium ions are preferentially taken up into the bulk of the electrodes. The increase in the end-of-charge potential on constant current charging in lithiated electrolyte compared with pure potassium hydroxide is attributed to the bulk incorporation of lithium into the Ni(OH)2 electrodes. X-ray studies have indicated no change in the phases present in the lithiated electrolytes either in the charged or discharged states. Cyclic voltametric measurements to 100 cycles showed no significant benefit due to lithium ions in terms of charge retention.
