    Notes: Abstract Photonic matrix switches using optical (directional coupler) and optoelectronic (photoconductor) principles are compared. It is concluded that, although broadband switching performance can be about equivalent for the individual devices, the optoelectronic matrix offers significant advantages in several important applications, particularly for large-scale broadband switching.
