Notes: A rigorous approach is discussed for solving the two-dimensional Helmholtz equation in a multiply-connected domain consisting of a ring of N circles distributed symmetrically within a closed space. The outer boundary has been taken to be such that the system as a whole has N-fold rotational symmetry. The Dirichlet boundary condition has been satisfied exactly at the outer as well as at each of the inner edges, using the addition theorems for the cylindrical Bessel functions in conjugation with the Fourier expansions. Numerical results, showing spatial configurational interference, are presented for the lowest cutoff value of the symmetric mode as a function of separation between centers of two inner circles, in the case N=2 with circular outer boundary. The application of the method to various problems of physics and engineering is enunciated.

Notes: Room-temperature integrated photoluminescence of Si-implanted n-type and semi-insulating wafers of single-crystal InP has been investigated as a technique for characterizing the quality of ion-implanted and annealed material. It was found that the intensity of the luminescence is a good indicator of the quality of the annealed samples. Using both rapid thermal annealing and conventional furnace annealing, not only was it possible to monitor the progressive activation of the implanted impurities, but we were also able to characterize the degradation occurring in the InP crystal due to the thermal exposure and to compare the results using different methods of surface protection. Combined with progressive wet etching of the implanted layers, it was also possible to use the photoluminescence response to spatially profile the activation and the degradation of the wafers. The results suggest that annealing, in general, is not able to restore the quality of the original unimplanted semiconductor and that even short transient anneal cycles can lead to detectable thermally induced material degradation, which extends many micrometers into the InP.

Notes: Summary The African treeCombretum caffrum (Combretaceae) has been found to contain a powerful inhibitor of tubulin polymerization (IC502–3 μM), the growth of murine lymphocytic leukemia (L 1210 and P 388 with ED50≈0.003 μM and human colon cancer cell lines [(e.g. LoVo (ED50=0.005 μg/ml), HT29 (ED50 0.02 μg/ml, Colo 205 (ED50=0.07 μg/ml), DLD-1 (ED50=0.005 μg/ml) and HCT-15 (ED50=0.0009 μg/ml)] designated combretastatin A-4 (1c). The structure assigned by spectral techniques was confirmed by synthesis.

Notes: Abstract Aspergillus fumigatus was isolated from a case of keratomycosis. The patient, a 12-year-old boy presented with large corneal ulcer with hypopyon. The direct microscopic examination of scrapings revealed hyaline, septate mycelium. In vitro some antimycotics (amphotericin B,5-fluorocytosine, oxiconazole, amorolfine and ketoconazole) were tested against A. fumigatus by agar dilution method. Ketoconazole with minimum inhibitory concentration of 30 μg/ml after 11 days of incubation was most effective against A. fumigatus. Experimental corneal ulcer was produced by injecting intralamellary spore suspension (2.5×106 c.f.u.) into the right eyes of previously immunosuppressed albino and black wild types of rabbits. The extent of ocular infection was graded up to 32 days. Histopathologic examination showed infiltration and large destruction of corneal stroma. Oral ketoconazole therapy exhibited partial response followed by relapse. The black type of rabbit appeared more suitable as an animal model for mycotic keratitis.

Notes: Conclusions From the study, it is observed that introduction of swirl in the central jet enhances the merger whereas higher swirl in the annulus enhances both mixing and flow development. On qualitative comparison with similar works (Gouldin et al. 1985; Ramos and Sommer 1983) it is seen that imposition of pressure gradient in form of expanded confinement enhances the capability of formation of central recirculation core. Wall static pressure distribution also gives an indication of the wall recirculation size.

Notes: Abstract We have demonstrated the presence of a dinitrophenyl glutathione (Dnp-SG) stimulated ATPase in human erythrocyte membranes. This ATPase mediates the active transport of glutathione — xenobiotic conjugate such as Dnp-SG from erythrocytes into the plasma. It is suggested that this transport system is distinct from the system which actively transports oxidized glutathione from the erythrocytes.

Notes: Abstract Phase transformation studies have been made of the Mn-Al alloys with compositions near the equiatomic range with or without small amounts of carbon, copper and nickel, using differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction and optical and electron microscopy. The high temperature hexagonalɛ phase obtained by quenching, transforms to the ferromagneticτ phase between 500 and 550° C and on further heating transforms back to the hexagonal phase between 750 and 950° C. Also, on controlled cooling of theɛ phase from about 900° C, the ferromagneticτ phase is formed between 800 and 670° C. TEM studies have shown the presence of the B19 ordered phase, ferromagneticτ phase and Mn5Al8 precipitates even in quenched alloys.

Notes: Summary Inheritance of resistance to common bacterial blight in the trifoliate leaf, plant canopy, and pods was controlled by a single major gene. Additive followed by dominance effects were more important than epistatic interactions. Narrow-sense heritability values ranged from 0.18 to 0.87 for trifoliate leaf, from 0.26 to 0.76 for canopy, and from 0.11 to 0.36 for pods. Observed gains from selection for resistance were higher than expected gains. Implications of these results in breeding for resistance are discussed.
