    Notes: Abstract A total of 215 ureteroceles were present in 41 children with single-system and 154 children with double-system ureteroceles. Males were predominant in the single-system group while the reverse was true in patients with double-system ureteroceles. Single-system ureteroceles occurred more commonly on the left side. In double-system ureteroceles there was minimal renal function in 74% of the ureterocele-bearing moieties, 26% of the ipsilateral lower moieties, and 3% of the contralateral kidneys. Vesicoureteric reflux (VUR) was present in 17% of the ureterocele-bearing ureters, 54% of the ipsilateral second ureters, and 28% of the contralateral ureters. In the single-system ureteroceles, 20% of the ipsilateral kidneys had minimal renal function and 9% of both the ipsilateral and contralateral ureters had VUR. Differences in laterality, VUR, and function of the subservient renal tissue suggest that single-system ureteroceles are a different disease entity from the double-system type and should be considered separately in any discussion of the management of ureteroceles.

    Notes: Abstract Protoplasts were isolated from cotyledon, hypocotyl and mesophyll cells of Corchorus capsularis L., a major fibre crop, by one step enzyme digestion method. They were further cultured successfully on modified KM-8p (Kao and Michayluk, 1975) medium to form microcalli. The required cultural conditions could be used to achieve 34% to 78% plating efficiency, depending upon the source of protoplasts. Hypocotyl protoplasts gave the highest plating efficiency. On transfer to regeneration medium, somatic embryos developed at high frequency. The present success is a significant step forward in the development of meaningful plant cell culture methods for application in jute.

    Notes: Abstract Shoot cultures of Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntz var. T-78, an elite Darjeeling tea clone, were established from cotyledonary nodes and shoot tips of germinated seedlings as well as from nodal explants of field grown plants. Shoot multiplication rate ranged from 4x in nodal explants to 35x in cotyledonary nodes after 18 weeks of culture. Rooting was achieved in 80–90% micro-shoots by either placing them on an inductive medium for 10 d and then transferring shoots to hormone-free medium, or by treating micro-shoots with a chronic dose of IBA (500 mg/l) for 30–40 min. Rooted plants were established in soil under glasshouse condition at 60% frequency after hardening phase of 4–6 weeks. The regenerated plants show a constant chromosome number of 2n=30 and are morphologically true to type. This procedure can be applied for conservation and utilisation of an elite clone of Darjeeling tea.

    Notes: Abstract The existing experimental data [Ferry and Spear 1978; Perchuk and Lavrent'eva 1983] on Mg−Fe partitioning between garnet and biotite are disparate. The underlying assumption of ideal Mg−Fe exchange between the minerals has been examined on the basis of recently available thermochemical data. Using the updated mixing parameters for the pyrope-almandine asymmetric regular solution as inputs [Ganguly and Saxena 1984; Hackler and Wood 1984], thermodynamic analysis points to non-ideal mixing in the phlogopite-annite binary in the temperature range of 550°C–950°C. The non-ideality can be approximated by a temperature-independent, one constant Margules parameter. The retrieved values for enthalpy of mixing for Mg−Fe biotites and the standard state enthalpy and entropy changes of the exchange reaction were combined with existing thermochemical data on grossular-pyrope and grossular-almandine binaries to obtain geothermometric expressions for Mg−Fe fractionation between biotite and garnet.     Notes: Abstract Silver and aluminium bimetallic thin film couples have been studied using constant heating rate differential scanning calorimetry both on cleaned glass substrates and freshly cleaved NaCl crystals. The most striking feature was the occurrence of two maxima in the reaction rate during the formation of a single product phase, Ag2Al, suggesting a two-step growth process. The activation energy for this reaction was 0.98 eV in the first step and 0.93 eV in the second step. These values are in good agreement with values obtained by a different technique, i.e. Rutherford back-scattering. Transmission electron microscopy, thin film X-ray diffraction, the change in resistance of bilayer films with temperature and thermodynamic and kinetic analyses have been used to investigate the intermetallic phase formation. It was observed that substrate plays an important role in the kinetics of thin-film reaction.

    Notes: Jute stick was treated with white-rot fungus for incubation periods of 6 days (MBA) and 12 days (MBB). The infrared spectra of fungus treated samples (MBA and MBB) and control jute stick (MBC) were analyzed and compared. The bands attributed mainly to hemicellulose show an increase in absorbance intensity ratios (Aν/A2900) with increase of incubation time. Similarly the bands attributed to lignin show an increase in the absorbance intensity ratios with increase of incubation time. Increase in the intensity of 1635 cm-1 band with increase of incubation time was also observed.
