Notes: The possibility is addressed of improving the electromigration resistance of Al and Al–Cu thin-film conductors with "quasi-bamboo'' structures by post-pattern anneals that decrease the maximum polygranular segment length. Pure Al, Al–2Cu, and Al–2Cu–1Si lines were patterned and annealed at temperatures high enough to stimulate grain growth. Appropriate anneals led to predominantly bamboo structures with short polygranular segments. These grain structures had a high median time to failure with a relatively low deviation of the time to failure. Metallographic analyses showed that polygranular segment length was a dominant factor in determining the failure site. Post-pattern annealing promotes a preferential shortening of the relatively long polygranular segments that cause early failures. However, even after annealing, failure occurred at the longest residual polygranular segments, even when these were significantly shorter than the "Blech length'' under the test conditions. Statistical analysis of the failure of alloy lines revealed a simple exponential relation between the failure time and the longest polygranular segment length within a line, which is functionally identical to that previously found for lines tested in the as-patterned condition.

Notes: Background: Abnormalities of gut motility and visceral pain perception are both thought to be involved in the pathogenesis of irritable bowel syndrome and may be susceptible to modulation by drugs affecting the various 5-HT receptor subtypes. The aim of this study was to investigate the therapeutic potential of a 5-HT3 antagonist in irritable bowel syndrome. Methods: Fifty patients with irritable bowel syndrome were treated with ondansetron, a highly selective 5-HT3 antagonist, in a double-blind, placebo-controlled cross-over study. In addition to assessing its effect on the classical symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (abdominal pain, distension and disordered bowel habit) its effect on symptoms often seen in irritable bowel syndrome, but more commonly associated with functional dyspepsia, was also examined. Results: Ondansetron reduced bowel frequency (P=0.035) and improved stool consistency (P=0.002) in diarrhoea predominant irritable bowel syndrome and did not cause a deterioration of bowel habit in constipation predominant subjects. No statistically significant improvement was seen for abdominal pain or distension, although those patients who did respond were approximately twice as likely to be taking ondansetron than placebo. It was also found that ondansetron significantly improved the upper gastrointestinal symptoms of post-prandial epigastric discomfort (P=0.008), flatulence (P=0.022) and heartburn (P=0.003). Conclusion: The results of this study justify evaluation of the therapeutic potential of selective 5-HT antagonists in both functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome.

Notes: Abstract We report a 63-year-old woman with a progressive illness which began as a parkinsonian syndrome with bilateral rest tremor, limb rigidity and a gait disorder followed by cognitive decline, visuomotor apraxia and visual agnosia. She died 10 years after the onset of the illness and at autopsy the brain showed characteristic changes of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) with the presence of the JC virus confirmed by in situ hybridisation. Neuropathology also showed some unusual features in the form of atypical linear lesions at the cortico-white matter junction. Some of these lesions were active while others were inactive and similar to the rarely described “burnt out” lesions of PML. PML can in rare cases occur without an underlying immune disorder or malignancy (primary PML) and a parkinsonian syndrome can be produced by a predominantly white matter disorder.

Notes: Abstract. Microglia and macrophages, immunolabelled with F4/80 (which binds a 160-kDa plasmalemmal glycoprotein) and OX-42 (which labels the complement type 3 receptor, CR3), were identified in the neuro- and adenohypophyses, respectively, of postnatal rats from day 1 to adulthood. In the neurohypophysis, the numerical density (cells/mm2) of microglia increased from postnatal day 1 to day 7 but was then unchanged from the adult density. In the adenohypophysis, the numerical density of macrophages increased from postnatal day 1 to day 21. The increasing size of the pituitary meant that the total number of such cells increased rapidly in the neurohypophysis up to day 14, but was then essentially unchanged; in the adenohypophysis macrophages increased in proportion to the increasing size of the gland up to day 21. Proliferation of the mononuclear cells was analysed by the immunodetection of bromodeoxyuridine incorporation into the nuclei of microglia and macrophages. F4/80-immunoreactive cells incorporating bromodeoxyuridine were found on all the postnatal days studied. The proportion of such cells in the neurohypophysis was high from postnatal day 1 to day 14 and in the adenohypophysis was maximal on day 14, decreasing in both parts of the pituitary by day 21. The estimated total number of proliferating cells was maximal in both parts of the pituitary on day 14. In both parts, OX-42-immunoreactive cells were less numerous than F4/80-immunoreactive cells up to postnatal day 14; CR3 expression may therefore be associated with maturation of these cells. Neurohypophysial microglia increased in size to postnatal day 7, consistent with the assumption of a ’compact’ microglial morphology; adenohypophysial macrophages did not change in size over the postnatal period. Throughout the period studied, neurohypophysial microglia were significantly more densely distributed and larger in size than adenohypophysial macrophages. Neurohypophysial microglia phagocytose terminals of neurosecretory neurons from day 7, concurrent with the development of a distinct perivascular space. In the adenohypophysis, the perivascular space was present from birth and macrophages were not phagocytic. There are, therefore, considerable differences in the density, morphology and activity between the populations of myelomonocytic cells in the postnatal rat neuro- and adenohypophyses.

Notes: Abstract. Our previous studies have proved the presence of substantial amounts of peptidergic nerve fibers in the anterior pituitary of human, monkey, dog, and rat, and synaptic contacts have been demonstrated on corticotrophs and somatotrophs in the dog. The present study is aimed at investigating the synaptic relationship between axons and gland cells in the rat. The substance P-like-immunoreactive nerve fibers were studied immuno-electron-microscopically. They were nonmyelinated and varicose. Typical synaptic contacts between the fibers and every type of the hormone-secreting gland cell could be identified, most frequently on lactotrophs. No synaptic contacts were found on the folliculo-stellate cell. The synaptic contacts were of asymmetrical type with clusters of small round clear vesicles at the presynaptic site and scattered large dense-cored vesicles. This pattern of synaptic relationships was markedly different from that in the dog. The presence of synapses in the anterior pituitary of the rat implies a direct neural regulation of certain cells and strongly supports our hypothesis of neural-humoral dual regulation of this gland.

Notes: Abstract One purpose of river maintenance within Britain is to deliver given standards of land drainage service relating to the control, within acceptable limits, of flooding and waterlogging on riparian, mainly agricultural land. Aquatic weed removal is a major maintenance activity. Authorities responsible for cost-effective river maintenance need to determine the extent and timing of vegetation removal in channels of various types. The impact of maintenance is being studied on 12 sites in five regions of the National Rivers Authority (NRA) in England and Wales. The impact of differing maintenance regimes on flooding and waterlogging and the consequences for agricultural performance are assessed. The longevity of maintenance in terms of the time taken for the ‘without’ maintenance watercourse condition to be reinstated following maintenance has been determined for gravel, sand and silt bed rivers on which vegetation cutting has been performed. The estimated benefits of river maintenance are set against costs to help formulate best maintenance strategies and prioritise and justify maintenance works.
