    Notes: The feasibility of growing device-quality cubic GaN/GaAs(001) films by metal organic chemical vapor deposition has been demonstrated. The optical quality of the GaN films was characterized by room-temperature photoluminescence measurements, which shows a full width at half maximum of 46 meV. The structural quality of the films was investigated by transmission electron microscopy. There are submicron-size grains free from threading dislocations and stacking faults. More importantly, a cubic-phase GaN blue light-emitting diode has been fabricated. The device process, which is very simple and compatible with current GaAs technology, indicates a promising future for the blue light-emitting diode. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: (1+1′) resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) spectra of jet-cooled KrXe and ArXe in the vicinity of the high energy Xe*5d[3/2]10←Xe(1S0) atomic line at 83889.99 cm−1 were obtained by exciting the neutral dimers with tunable coherent vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation generated by four-wave sum mixing in mercury vapor, and then detecting the resultant ions in a time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometer. Precise excited state constants were derived from analyses of the resultant vibrational fine structure, while equilibrium bond lengths were estimated from Franck–Condon factor intensity simulations. Excited state symmetries were deduced from separate ultraviolet (UV) (2+1) REMPI spectra recorded with linearly and circularly polarized light. The results of this work confirm a recent model proposed by Lipson and Field, where the RgXe*(5d) states are predicted to be strongly destabilized relative to RgXe*(6p) due to strong 5d-6p Xe* l-mixing induced by the ground state Rg atom partner making up the dimer. Orbital mixing is also responsible for the observation of appreciably strong RgXe*(5d) spectra in both one- and two-photon excitation. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In situ white-beam synchrotron radiation topographic observations under an electric field have been made on the KTiOPO4 (KTP) family of crystals. The investigation shows a strong enhancement of diffracted intensity for hkl reflections (l ≠ 0) and topographic contrast in the form of fine striations when the external electric field is parallel to the polar axis. Several kinds of doped and undoped samples with various grown-in defects, such as domain boundaries, growth striations, growth-sector boundaries, dislocations, etc., have been studied in detail. The results suggest that these defects have very little effect on the field-induced striations. It is believed that the movement of K^+ ions driven by the electric field leads to a local accumulation of charges and a lattice distortion. The strongly anisotropic conductivity is a governing factor in the explanation of the field-related phenomena in this kind of quasi-one-dimensional conductor.

    Notes: Abstract An adsorption strength model is developed to describe the mechanism of codeposition of α-alumina and Fe–P alloy. Based on hypotheses concerning the effective adsorption and the distribution of the adsorption strength of particles on the cathode, a general expression relating the content of embedded particles to the suspension concentration and the current density is deduced. This relationship is in good agreement with the experimental results. The variation of the content of particles in deposits with current density is an overall balance of two opposing effects which leads to a maximum in the particle content against current density curve.

    Notes: Abstract. A data weighting method for combining different geodetic data based on statistical tests of the residuals is discussed. By requiring the residuals of combination solution to be white Gaussian as a sample of random noise, the relative weight factors can be determined internally, independent of external comparisons. To achieve this goal and to assess the solution, the Pearson χ2 and higher-order moments of residuals are used to measure quantitatively the discrepancies between the residuals and white Gaussian noise.

    Notes: Abstract: On the basis of the nondegenerate quantum-beat laser model, we introduce a coherent field which drives the transition between the upper lasing level and an auxiliary level. We demonstrate that such a four-level system can produce squeezed two-mode laser without and with inversion. When the laser is operated well above threshold, the intensity fluctuation in the average mode is reduced below the shot noise with an optimum Mandel parameter Q=- 1/2. At the same time, the noises in the relative amplitude and the relative phase drop to their vaccum noise levels. Furthermore, regardless of inversion, noninversion, and transition between inversion and noninversion, the optimum Mandel Q parameter of Q=- 1/2 is retained when the system operates well above threshold. A simple physical explanation of the squeezing mechanism for two-mode squeezing is given.
