    Notes: A study of magnetic and structural properties of (CoxFe100−x)50 (0[less, double equals]x[less, double equals]100) alloy thin films as functions of composition and substrate deposition-temperature Ts is carried out. The intrinsic perpendicular magnetic anisotropy Ku starts to increase with deposition temperature Ts for all the films (0[less, double equals]x[less, double equals]100) at about TS=250–300 °C, and then becomes nearly constant. The maximum values of Ku at room temperature thus obtained are 6×107, 4×107, and 2×107 erg/cc for Fe50Pt50, (Co43Fe57)50Pt50 and Co50Pt50, respectively. Also, the Ku of Fe50Pt50 films increases with the order parameter (S), being closely related with the tetragonality c/a. These results indicate that the evolution of Ku is due to the occurrence of the ordered fct phase. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The intrinsic perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and the domain patterns in granular CoxAg1−x films with 17%≤x≤62% are studied. Magnetic stripe domains are found in samples with x≥45% and to change to in-plane domain patterns with increasing annealing temperature. This is consistent with the fact that perpendicular magnetic anisotropy becomes negative with annealing. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have investigated the anisotropy behavior and temperature dependent changes of the magnetic anisotropy in Gd/Fe and Gd/(FeCo) multilayers. The spin reorientation effects are very important for the super resolution readout in new methods for high-density magneto-optical recording. Gd/(Fe, Co) multilayered films are a good alternative to the common Gd(Fe, Co) alloy films, because the magnetic anisotropy and also spin reorientation effects can be comfortably adjusted by varying the interface and volume anisotropy components and the composition using experimental parameters such as the periodicity λ=tGd+tTM [tGd,tTM: the sublayer thicknesses of the Gd and transition metal Fe, FeCo (TM)] and the ratio of the sublayer thicknesses tGd/tTM. We have found the mechanisms for spin reorientation, which are explained qualitatively with a new model. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The magnetic and magneto-optical properties of TbFeCo/(Pt, Pd) multilayer films prepared by sputter deposition are discussed in conjunction with their multilayer structure. The effect of polarized Pt on the polar Kerr spectra is significant at ultraviolet photon energies (∼5 eV). Based on the magnetic and magneto-optical properties, it is quite reasonable to surmise that an alloy is formed at the interface in real multilayers. It is the most obvious evidence that the saturation magnetization drastically increases with Pt and Pd thickness up to 12 Å, which indicates that the interfacial regions are essentially due to Fe–Pt and Fe–Pd alloys. This possibility was supported by the simulation of Kerr spectrum for the proposed model based on the layered-structural analyses. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A zirconium sputtering ion source was studied. The argon plasma discharged by electron cyclotron resonance was used as the sputtering working plasma. A cylindrical-type target was used as the sputter target. The zirconium flux is evaluated at the downstream side of the ion source by varying the magnetic field profile of the ion source. And a magnetic profile dependence of the zirconium flux was observed. Zirconium ions and argon ions were detected by a quadrupole mass spectrometer. From the zirconium flux and the ion current, the ionization efficiency was evaluated. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: To determine whether hepatocellular apoptosis is involved in chronic liver injury in patients with chronic hepatitis C, the correlations among the rate of hepatocellular apoptosis, the rate of hepatocytes infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) and TGF-β1 mRNA expression, were histologically examined. HCV was visualized by in situ PCR technique. Apoptotic hepatocytes were determined by TUNEL technique. TGF-β1 mRNA expression was quantified by Northern blotting analysis, and visualized by in situ hybridization. Fas-antigen and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) on hepatocytes, and α-smooth muscle actin (αSMA) and desmin were evaluated by immunohistochemistry. In the areas of inflammation, TUNEL-positive apoptotic hepatocytes and PCNA-positive hepatocytes were occasionally observed around HCV-positive hepatocyte. TGF-β1 mRNA-positive myofibroblast-like Ito cells (double-positive for αSMA and desmin) were also observed near the HCV-positive hepatocytes. Fas-antigen was detected on the surface of most hepatocytes in all lobules. A high correlation was found between the rate of HCV positive hepatocytes and that of apoptotic hepatocytes (r = 0.81, P 〈 0.05). The increase in number of HCV-positive hepatocytes was linked to the increases in TGF-β1 mRNA level (r = 0.79, P 〈 0.05) and number of TGF-β1 mRNA-positive Ito cells (r = 0.74, P 〈 0.05). These findings confirmed that the increase in HCV-infected hepatocytes is related to the increase of hepatocellular apoptosis and the increase of TGF-β1 mRNA in the liver of hepatitis C patients. TGF-β1 plays an important role in apoptosis of hepatocytes infected with HCV.

    Notes: Pressed-powder cosmetics with an extremely soft and light sense of touch were prepared using a novel ultra-low pressure molding technology. These novel pressed-powder cosmetics have a very high porosity creating a light silky feeling. Furthermore, with this novel molding, large quantities of organic crystalline powder can be incorporated into the cosmetics resulting in a good spreadability and smooth sense of touch. The novel molding technology named soft press molding developed in the current study involves several characteristic stages: (i) mixing the binder dispersion; (ii) soft compression; and (iii) drying (volatilizing a disperse medium). The first process is the mixing of water-repellent powder with an aqueous dispersion of elastic film-forming polymer into a pendular or funicular state. After compressing and drying, an interspersed polymer effectively combines the particles forming contact between the particles. In this study, calcium lauroyl taurate (CaLT) was used as an example of an organic crystalline powder to provide a silky smooth sense of touch to a powdery foundation. CaLT particles deform to a thin layer readily when applied to skin, creating a smooth pleasing sensation while spreading. Conventional high-pressure molding causes deformation during compression resulting in hard-caking of the molded cosmetics. However, by using soft press molding, the powdery foundation can contain more than 30 wt% of CaLT without hard-caking, and the resultant powdery foundation expresses an extremely smooth sensation to the touch. Furthermore, this powdery foundation shows a natural finish approximating bare skin due to the deformation of a thin layer on application restricting the light scattering, a characteristic property of a powder.
