    Notes: 1. Blood pressure decreased significantly at a late stage of pregnancy in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) but this reduction tended to disappear shortly after delivery. Since acute and chronic administration of progesterone, prolactin and estrone failed to reduce blood pressure, these hormones were not responsible for a fall of blood pressure at a late stage of pregnancy in SHRs. Exogenous administration of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) significantly reduced blood pressure, but endogenous prostaglandin E1 (PGE1), PGE2 and prostaglandin F2α(PGF2α) in plasma did not increase at a late stage of pregnancy.2. Plasma from pregnant SHRs produced a significant reduction of blood pressure in male and female SHRs, but the plasma from male and non-pregnant female SHRs failed to reduce blood pressure. Plasmas from pregnant SHRs were less effective in reducing blood pressure when tested in Wistar Kyoto rats (WKYs).3. It is concluded that a hypotensive factor is circulating at a late stage of pregnancy in SHRs.

    Notes: Aim:  Reliable makers for progenitor cells in the human stomach have not been elucidated. The aim of the present study was to clarify whether Musashi-1 (Msi-1), which has recently been proposed as a stem cell marker in mouse intestine, serves as a marker for progenitor cells in human stomach.Methods and results:  Immunohistochemistry revealed that Msi-1+ cells were detected especially in the isthmus/neck region (the putative position of stem cells) of the adult antrum, but were limited to the basal regions of fetal pyloric glands during the early stages of development. These results suggest that Msi-1 expression occurs specifically in the stem cell-containing regions. Msi-1+ cells were intermingled with proliferating cell muclear antigen (PCNA)+ cells in the isthmus/neck region of the adult antrum, but did not coexpress PCNA or Ki67. Msi-1 expression overlapped partly with expression of MUC5AC and MUC6, indicating that Msi-1+ cells retain some features of both foveolar and pyloric gland cell differentiation phenotypes. In contrast, Msi-1 expression in gastric glands showing intestinal metaplasia (IM) became weaker than that in the glands without IM.Conclusion:  The specific expression of Msi-1 within the proliferative regions suggests that Msi-1 is a marker of cells with progenitor characteristics before active proliferation in human antrum.

    Notes: In order to elucidate the predominance of Goss grains after SIBM in electrical steelsheets, Goss, D-Cube and {111}〈112〉 grains after temper rolling of 5 and 9% reduction wereobserved by TEM. In 5% strain the amount of dislocations in Goss grains was the smallest of thethree orientations. In 9% strain dislocations in Goss grains were distributed more heterogeneouslythan the other two types of grains. It is considered that {111}〈112〉 grains have large amounts ofdislocations owing to high Taylor factors and the differences of microstructures between Goss andD-Cube grains are due to orientation stabilities. Goss grains are speculated to be easy to recover andtherefore they are predominant after SIBM

    Notes: Abstract A real need has existed for the development of simple, inexpensive, and yet functionally significant gait assessment systems that could be used in clinical practice. The paper describes a new scheme for the data processing of the output of a simple foot force measuring device previously reported by the authors. Only vertical forces exerted on the forefoot and the heel are measured continuously by the device. From these signals, the muscle moment acting on the ankle, the centre of pressure in one foot and the centre of pressure between both feet are calculated. Thus information on the muscle activities at the ankle and on the transfer of body weight in the progressional direction is derived. A brief description of the mathematical background is given first, and the clinical relevance of this method is discussed with several illustrations of preliminary results on normal and pathological subjects.

    Notes: Abstract Although various methods have been proposed for quantitative evaluation of pathological gait, they are not yet widely used as routine clinical tools. The reasons are that measuring systems are too expensive and complicated and that the validity of the methods has not been fully examined in a statistical manner. In this paper, the validity of a new evaluation method based on a simple foot-force measuring device is investigated in terms of the correlation between quantitative indices and visually-rated grades. Forty-eight hemiparetic patients secondary to cerebral vascular accident walked on a 15 m straight level floor. Four people independently evaluated each subject in eight gait characteristics or items on a scale of 1–4 grades on the basis of visual inspection. These items include symmetry, variation, fluctuation, and dependence on the cane. At the same time, the vertical ground-reaction forces exerted on the right and left feet and on the cane were measured, and then quantitative indices representing these eight items were derived. All but one index shows a reasonably good correlation with the mean of the grades of the four observers. Thus, the feasibility of these indices is demonstrated. Statistical analysis also reveals several problems inherent in visual rating, such as inconsistency in the interpretation of evaluation criteria among observers, and a degradation of the independence of items owing to the observer’s subjectivity.
