Notes: Motoneuron dependence on target-derived trophic factors during development is well established, with loss of trophic support leading to the death of these cells. A complete understanding of the intracellular signal transduction machinery associated with extracellular survival signals requires the examination of individual pathways in various cellular and environmental contexts. In cells deprived of trophic support, and hence compromised for survival, phosphoinositide-3-kinase (PI3K) is decreased when compared with healthy cells supplied with trophic support. Extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) signaling is dramatically decreased in deprived cells. We have examined the role of these two pathways to understand how changes in their activity regulate motoneuron survival and death. Pharmacological inhibition of PI3K attenuated motoneuron survival and was important in the regulation of Bcl-2 serine phosphorylation, limited release of cytochrome c into the cytoplasm and caspase activation. Bax translocation from cytoplasm to mitochondria was not altered when PI3K was inhibited. High levels of ERK1/2 inhibition robustly attenuated motoneuron survival in cells supplied with trophic support, whereas moderate inhibition of ERK1/2 activation had little effect. ERK1/2 inhibition in these cells decreased Bcl-2 phosphorylation and resulted in release of cytochrome c from the mitochondria. Bax translocation and caspase activation were not affected by ERK1/2 inhibition. These data reveal that changes in PI3K and ERK1/2 signaling lead to individual and overlapping effects on the cell-death machinery. Characterizing the role of these pathways is critical for a fundamental understanding of the development and degeneration of specific neuronal populations.

Notes: summary The study aimed to investigate oral health-related quality of life (OHR-QoL) of stroke survivors on hospital discharge after rehabilitation. It was a cross-sectional study involving 43 elderly survivors of mild to moderate stroke about to be discharged from hospital after rehabilitation and a comparison group of 43 community-dwelling elderly people. The Medical Outcomes Short Form 36 (SF-36) measure, the General Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) and an oral health transition scale were administered prior to a dental examination. Median SF-36 subscale scores were significantly different between groups (P 〈 0·05). In physical function, role-physical, role-emotional and mental health domains, stroke survivors had significantly lower scores indicating poorer health. The median GOHAI score for the stroke group was 52 and 54 for the comparison group with no significant difference between groups although more stroke survivors had difficulty speaking compared with the comparison group. About 75% of stroke survivors considered their appearance to be worse, half of them felt that speech was worse and about a third had difficulty chewing hard food compared with the pre-stroke condition (P 〈 0·05). Most participants were partially dentate with no significant difference in DMFT scores or prosthetic status between groups (P 〉 0·05). Health-related quality of life in general was significantly poorer after stroke although patients were considered physically well enough to be discharged from hospital. There was some impairment of OHR-QoL. The nature of the stroke, the hospital environment including diet, coping strategies and elderly Chinese peoples’ perception of health should be taken into account when interpreting measures of health status in stroke survivors.

Notes: A feeding trial with five crude protein levels (549, 513, 472, 445 and 399 g kg−1) was conducted to investigate the optimum protein level in diets of juvenile southern flounder (Paralichthys lethostigma). Budgets of nitrogen and energy were discussed. Fish (initial weight 32.9 ± 0.5 g fish−1, mean ± SD) were fed the experimental diets to satiation twice daily for 61 days. Protein levels affected specific growth rate in wet weight (SGRW) and protein (SGRP) significantly. SGRW and SGRP were highest at 512.5 g kg−1 protein level. SGRW was positively correlated to growth nitrogen (GN), growth energy (GE), nitrogen digestibility, energy digestibility, amount of digestible nitrogen and amount of digestible energy. Faecal nitrogen (FN) and faecal energy (FE) were affected significantly with trends contrary to SGRW. The nitrogen budget was described by the equation 100CN = 2.1FN + 34.4UN + 63.5GN (CN, nitrogen intake; UN, excretion nitrogen). The energy budget was 100IE = 4.04FE +3.32UE + 54.35GE + 38.30ME (IE, gross energy intake; UE, excretion energy; ME, metabolizable energy). The average proportion of GE and ME in assimilated energy (AE) was described by the equation 100AE = 58.65GE + 41.35ME.

Notes: White spot syndrome virus (WSSV) is a serious pathogen of aquatic crustaceans. Little is known about its transmission in vivo and the immune reaction of its hosts. In this study, the circulating haemocytes of crayfish, Procambarus clarkii, infected by WSSV, and primary haemocyte cultures inoculated with WSSV, were collected and observed by transmission electron microscopy and light microscopy following in situ hybridization. In ultra-thin sections of infected haemocytes, the enveloped virions were seen to be phagocytosed in the cytoplasm and no viral particles were observed in the nuclei. In situ hybridization with WSSV-specific probes also demonstrated that there were no specific positive signals present in the haemocytes. Conversely, strong specific positive signals showed that WSSV replicated in the nuclei of gill cells. As a control, the lymphoid organ of shrimp, Penaeus monodon, infected by WSSV was examined by in situ hybridization which showed that WSSV did not replicate within the tubules of the lymphoid organ. In contrast to previous studies, it is concluded that neither shrimp nor crayfish haemocytes support WSSV replication.

Notes: The cause of psoriatic erythroderma (PE) is still unknown. Elevation of serum IgE has been reported in erythroderma, and as serum hyper-IgE is Th2 cell dominated it is of interest to investigate the serum IgE level in PE. In this study, the level of immunoglobulins in the sera of PE patients was analysed by a retrospective case–control study using psoriasis vulgaris (PV) patients as controls. The PE and PV patients were matched in a 1 : 3 pattern: the first three age and sex matched PV inpatients were selected. All of the subjects were nonatopic and without allergic history. The serum IgE level was found to be elevated in 81.3% of the PE group, which is much higher than that (6.3%) of the controls (odds ratio, 65.0; 95% CI, 11.7–361.2; P 〈 0.001; χ2 test). The mean level of serum IgE was much higher in the PE group (272.38 ± 207.63 IU/mL vs. 53.20 ± 86.05 IU/mL, P 〈 0.001, Student's t-test). No differences were found for other immunoglobulins. These results suggest that in PE the Th1/Th2 cell imbalance may be switched from Th1 dominant to Th2 dominant. The exact role of serum IgE in PE should be investigated further.

Notes: Experiments are carried out on a femtosecond laser micromachining system with thewavelength 775nm. The ablated patterns on Si (100) and Si (111) surfaces affected by femtosecondpulse laser parameters are presented. The periodic structure termed ripples on silicon surface isinvestigated. Two kinds of ripples on the ablated surface are observed by SEM. The whole ablationregion indicates the ablated field of all amount of laser energy. The ablation region forms twocircular areas. The cross section image of the ablated region is showed which is cut by FIB in theorthogonal direction of the line of the center ripples. The depth of ripples is measured. Adjusted thelaser fluence as about 0.3~0.33J/cm2 and the pulse number as changeable from 1 to 50, the formingprocess of the ripples is observed and studied by AFM. Another experiment is done that thewave-plates are inserted into the space between the objective and sample, the result of the directionof ripples changed with the wave-plates of 1/2 or 1/4 is reviewed

Notes: An angular velocity of flow sensor for liquids based on single-walled carbon nanotubethin films is presented. The carbon nanotubes in this study were fabricated on Si substrate by hotfilament chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The experimental results showed that the flow-inducedcurrent on the surface of carbon nanotube thin films was closely depended upon the angularvelocity, concentration, properties and temperature of the liquids. The current increased withincreasing angular velocity, concentration and temperature of the liquids. In this study, the liquidssuch as water, NaCl solution and other electrolyte were flowing over the sensor. The resultsobtained were also discussed. The theoretical and experimental studies have shown that there waselectronic friction and electron drag effect of carbon nanotubes in flowing liquids. This effect incarbon nanotubes can be used for a new flow sensor
