Notes: 1. Historical nutrient changes in Grasmere were investigated using a 300-year record derived from six sediment cores. One core was investigated at high resolution for diatoms, total sedimentary phosphorus, and loss-on-ignition (LOI), and was dated using 210Pb and 137Cs. Six other cores were scanned for magnetic susceptibility, diatoms and LOI to confirm the stratigraphic integrity of the primary record.2. A rise in nutrient levels occurred after 1855 AD. This event was marked by a shift away from benthic diatom assemblages and a rise in Asterionella formosa. The onset of eutrophication from 1855 corresponds to the expansion of the local and tourist population in the area.3. The replacement of A. formosa with Cyclotella spp. ca 1945–65 indicates reduced nutrient loads, possibly because of enhanced flushing brought about by the seasonal rainfall distribution.4. After 1965 a step-wise increase in both absolute and relative amounts of Asterionella was found. High sedimentary P and diatom inferred TP confirmed the high nutrient loading of the lake. Nutrient increase is attributable to problems with the Grasmere village sewage system and the installation of a wastewater treatment works (WwTW) on the River Rothay in 1971. Modifications to the WwTW in 1982 caused an initial improvement, but have not led to a full recovery to pre-1965 ecological conditions.5. The diatom record indicates a further improvement after 1990 by a return toward Achnanthes minutissima.6. The sedimentary archive of sensitive sites provides important benchmarks against which to judge the attainment of water quality targets.

Notes: Natural hybrids between Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) and European trout (S. trutta L.) have been detected in a sample of 4431 fish which appeared to be Atlantic salmon. The methods of analysis for serum protein, serum esterase and serum lactic dehydrogenase are given. The possible occurrence of hybrids having the appearance of European trout and the effect of introgression on salmon stocks are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Results of studies using tests of thought disorder suggest the possibility of distinguishing three separate and possibly independent syndromes among schizophrenic patients. “Process schizophrenics” seem to be characterized by a relatively low I.Q., general psychomotor retardation, a slow reaction time, perceptual underconstancy, concreteness and distractibility. Many of these specific defects can be produced in normal people by the drug “Sernyl”, but not by other drugs studied. No known drug (such as the phenothiazines) has been shown to improve all these dysfunctions significantly in schizophrenic patients. “Psychotic anxiety reaction” is a label which might be used to describe the thinking disturbances found in many reactive schizophrenics. It consists of a tendency to produce unusual responses in a wide range of experimental situations, accompanied by an unusual degree of “perceptual constancy”. These behavioral abnormalities might be due to the disruptive effects of a very high level of anxiety, and might be alleviated by depressant drugs. “Overinclusive Psychosis”, characterizes a minority of hyperactive schizophrenics and some manic patients, who seem to use unusually broad and vaguely defined concepts in their thinking. LSD may induce this type of thinking in normal subjects, and it is possible that it may respond to phenothiazine medication.

Notes: Summary A series of experiments was carried out in which attempts were made to achieve maximum survival ofTheileria parva-infected bovine erythrocytes in inoculated rabbits. By varying the treatment of the rabbits and of the erythrocytes and by altering the route of inoculation, it was finally shown that the best and most consistent results could be obtained by the intravenous inoculation of 20 ml of infected bovine blood into splenectomised rabbits. When nymphalRhipicephalus appendiculatus ticks were fed on such rabbits, the resultant adult ticks showed highTheileria parva infection rates in their salivary glands.
