    Notes: Abstract Tomato is an important vegetable crop in Kenya and the development of salt tolerant cultivars would enhance its productivity in the vast marginal areas of the country. This study was aimed at determining the magnitude of genotypic variability for salt tolerance in the Kenyan tomato germplasm. Pot experiments with 22 landraces and 9 market cultivars were laid out as a two and four replicate split-plot design in glasshouse in Experiments 1 and 2, respectively. Salt treatments in Experiment 1 were 0 and 5 g NaCl kg-1 resulting into 0.5 and 9.1 dS m-1 of the soil saturation extracts, respectively. In Experiment 2 the treatments were 0, 4, and 8 g NaCl kg-1 soil corresponding to 0.5, 7.4, and 14.2 dS m-1, respectively. Data were recorded on agronomic and biochemical parameters. The germplasm showed large variation for salt tolerance. Fruit and seed production at soil salinity of 14.2 dS m-1 demonstrated that these tomatoes are fairly tolerant of NaCl. Osmotic adjustment was achieved by higher fruit electrical conductivity, brix and total titratable acidity. Low and high contents of K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ within tomato tissues and soil, respectively, under salt treatment, confirmed competition and antagonism involving Na+ and these cations. Low Na+ and Cl- contents in the fruit at 7.4 dS m-1 revealed their exclusion and ensured production of physiologically normal seeds and nutritionally healthy fruits. Two landraces ‘Chwerotonglo’ and ‘Nyanyandogo’ were identified as salt tolerant. Comparatively, the market cultivars showed superior fruit yields despite their susceptibility to salinity. Accordingly, tolerance of landraces in combination with superior yields of the market cultivars is suitable for tomato improvement for salt tolerance.

    Notes: 2,2-Dibutyl-2-stanna-1,3-dioxacycloalkanes were prepared from dibutyltin oxide and 1,2-ethanediol, 1,3-propanediol or 1,4-butanediol. These tin heterocycles reacted stoichiometrically with double molar amounts of γ-thiobutyrolactone by a stepwise insertion. In contrast to γ-thiobutyrolactone an excess of γ-thiocaprolactone resulted in additional insertion steps, i.e., polymerization of the thiolactone. Analogous insertion reactions were performed with a spirocyclic stannoxane derived from pentaerythritol. With ε-caprolactone macrocyclic polymerization took place without stoichiometric intermediates. When the 2,2-dibutylstanna-dioxepane was reacted with an equimolar amount of 1,3-dithian-2-one, the insertion step was immediately followed by a ring contraction reaction yielding 2-stanna-1,3-dithiane and trimethylene carbonate which polymerized immediately. The application of this reaction sequence to macrocyclic stanna poly(ε-caprolactone) yielded tin-free macrocycles along with 2,2-dibutyl-2-stanna-1,3-dithiane. This reaction sequence allows the synthesis of nontoxic, biodegradable macrocyclic polyesters.

    Description / Table of Contents: On the System Ba2Sm0.67(1-x)La0.67xUO6In the Ba2Sm0.67xUO6 system the boundary of the perovskite phase reachs up to x ≅ 0.33. With increasing Lanthanum content a transition from a structure with vacancies in the SE3+-sublattice to a lattice typ with interstitial oxygen is observed. By the interpretation of the reflectance and vibrational spectra the relations between colour and constitution are shown.
    Notes: Im System Ba2Sm0,67(1-x)La0,67xUO6 reicht die Grenze der Perowskitphase bis zu x ≅ 0,33. Mit steigendem La-gehalt findet ein Übergang von einer Struktur mit Lücken im SE3+-Teilgitter zu einem Gittertyp mit Sauerstoff auf Zwischengitterplätzen statt. Die Zusammenhänge zwischen Farbe und Konstitution werden anhand der diffusen Reflexionsspektren und der Schwingungsspektren aufgezeigt.

System Ba2Gd2/3□1/3U1-xWxO6The cation deficient polymorphic perovskites Ba2Gd2/3□1/3UO6 and Ba2Gd2/3□1/3WO6 form a continuous series of mixed crystals, which crystallize over a wide range (x = 0.1 up to 0.99) in a cubic 1:1 ordered perovskite lattice. According to the investigations of the vibrational spectra, the diffuse reflectance spectra, and the photoluminescence  -  opposite to isostructural perovskites without vacancies  -  different species of UO6 and WO6 octahedra are present. Numerous differences in properties  -  e. g. an orange emission colour in comparison with a green one by absence of vacancies  -  are based upon that.
    Notes: Die beiden fehlstellenhaltigen, polymorphen Perowskite Ba2Gd2/3□1/3UO6 und Ba2Gd2/3□1/3WO6 bilden eine lückenlose Reihe von Mischkristallen, die in einem weiten Bereich (x = 0,1 bis 0,99) in einem kubischen 1:1 geordneten Perowskitgitter kristallisieren. Wie die Untersuchung der Schwingungsspektren, der diffusen Reflexionsspektren und der Photolumineszenz zeigen, liegen  -  im Gegensatz zu isostrukturellen fehlstellenfreien Perowskiten  -  mehrere Sorten an UO6- und WO6-Oktaedern vor. Hierauf sind zahlreiche Eigenschaftsunterschiede  -  z. B. eine orangefarbene Emission im Unterschied zu einer grünen bei Abwesenheit von Fehlstellen  -  zurückzuführen.

The corresponding TiIV and HfIV compounds, Ba6Nb4Zr□O18 and Ba6Nb4Hf□O18, are isotypic.
    Notes: Das weiße Ba6Nb4Zr□O18 kristallisiert in einer rhomboedrischen 18 L-Struktur (a = 5,821 Å; c = 42,63 Å; R. G. R3m) mit drei Formeleinheiten pro trigonal aufgestellter Zelle (ϱgef = 6,05 g/cm3; ϱber = 6,271 g/cm3). Die entsprechenden Verbindungen mit TiIV und HfIV, Ba6Nb4Ti□O18 und Ba6Nb4Hf□O18 sind isotyp.

Compounds of Type A2IIB1/4IIB1/2III□1/4MVIO6 ≙ A8IIBIIB2III□M4VIO24 with AII, BII = Ba, Sr, Ca and MVI = U, WPerovskites of type Ba8BIIB2III□U4VIO24 show polymorphic phase transformations of order disorder type. An 1:1 ordered orthorhombic HT form is transformed into a higher ordered LT modification with a fourfold cell content (four formula units Ba8BIIB2III□U4O24), compared to cubic 1:1 ordered perovskites A2BMO6. In the series Ba8BaB2III□W4O24 and Sr8SrB2III□W4O24 different ordering phenomena are observed. In comparison with 1:1 ordered cubic perovskites A2BMO6, the cell contains eight formula units A8IIBIIB2III□W4O24. The higher ordered cells with UVI and WVI are face centered, which has its origin in an ordering of cationic vacancies.
    Notes: Perowskite vom Typ Ba8BIIB2III□U4VIO24 zeigen polymorphe Phasenumwandlungen vom Ordnungs-Unordnungs-Typ. Eine 1:1 geordnete rhombische HT-Form wandelt sich in eine höhere geordnete TT-Modifikation um, die gegenüber kubischen 1:1 geordneten Perowskiten A2BMO6 einen vierfachen Zellinhalt besitzt (4 Formeleinheiten Ba8BIIB2III□U4O24). In den Reihen Ba8BaB2III□W4O24 und Sr8SrB2III□W4O24 werden andersartige Ordnungsphänomene beobachtet: Der Zellinhalt ist gegenüber kubischen 1:1 geordneten Perowskiten A2BMO6 verachtfacht mit 8 Formeleinheiten A8IIBIIB2III□W4O24. Die höher geordneten Zellen mit UVI und WVI sind jeweils flächenzentriert, was auf eine Fehlstellenordnung zurückzuführen ist.
