Notes: In this paper, a method for the high-cycle fatigue life prediction of components subjected to gaussian, stationary, wide band random loading is presented. It allows the user to evaluate the fatigue life of components subjected to uniaxial stress states directly from the stress power spectral density (PSD), avoiding onerous simulations in time domain. The proposed method can be applied to random stress processes having PSD of any shape, and the fatigue life predictions obtained are more accurate than that provided by most of the frequency domain techniques proposed in literature.

Notes: Abstract A commercially available neon indicator lamp in a Relaxation Oscillator (RO) configuration has been demonstrated to be capable of detecting light intensities of the order of nanowatts under ambient light conditions with a subpicometer spectral resolution. The RO has also been shown as capable of acting as a wireless light switch with light intensities of the order of 1 µW. Temporal excitation studies have also shown the predominant mechanism describing the observed frequency changes in the RO to be a result of laser perturbation of the neon lamp when it is in the Townsend-discharge region and not in the abnormal glow.

Notes: Abstract The following is a status report of the experiment PVLAS, whose aim is the measurement of the Polarization of Vacuum, induced by a high magnetic field. It includes a detailed description of the experimental set-up, in which a superconducting dipole magnet of more than 8 T, and a Fabry-Perot optical interferometer with a finesse of more than 130,000 are used. The experiment is in progress at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro in Italy.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, a technique for full-field evaluation of the isoclinic parameter is presented. It combines the phase-shifting method with true color imaging technology to minimize the interaction between isoclinic and isochromatic fringes. The paper also shows how the proposed technique can be suitably integrated with known methods for evaluating the retardations. Furthermore, a digital algorithm for filtering wrapped phase data obtained by general phase-shifting techniques is presented.

Notes: Abstract A method is described for measuring the gold content of integral and size-segregated samples of atmospheric particulate matter. After acid digestion and a liquid/ liquid extraction, the sample are analysed by Two-Colour Laser Induced Fluorescence in a graphite furnace. An absolute instrumental detection limit of 1 fg is achieved. Assuming a sampled volume of 1 m3, this corresponds to an atmospheric concentration of 50 fg m–3. Due to blank limited noise, the above limits increase to 20 fg and 1 pg m–3, respectively. Results of the analysis of filter samples as well as of size-segregated impactor samples are presented.

Notes: Abstract In this paper a new full-field method for the automatic analysis of isochromatic fringes in white light is presented. The method, named RGB photoelasticity, eliminates the typical drawbacks of the classical approach to photoelasticity in white light which requires a subjective analysis of colors and an experienced analyst to acquire and interpret the results. The proposed method makes it possible to determine retardations uniquely in the range of 0–3 fringe orders. For this purpose the isochromatics are acquired by means of a color video camera and the colors are decomposed in the three primary colors (red, green and blue) and compared to those stored in a calibration array in the system. Furthermore, the influence of various spurious effects on the accuracy of the proposed method is experimentally evaluated.
