Notes: The technique of crossed antigen-antibody immuno-electrophoresis has been used to compare the serum protein changes of severe pre-eclampsia with the changes of normal pregnancy.Decrease in the concentrations of serum albumin, transferrin and haemopexin and an increased concentration of α1 glycoprotein, α2 macroglobulin and β lipoprotein were found, giving a protein pattern essentially like that of the nephrotic syndrome. It is believed that these changes are a result of urinary loss of the proteins of intermediate molecular weight, with a compensatory unselective increased synthesis of protein in the liver, and retention in the serum of macroglobulins which are too large to pass through the defective glomerular basement membrane.

Notes: 10. 2. lugentem timentemque custodire solemus, ne solitudine male utatur.Reynolds does not mention Haupt's conjecture amentemque, which is certainly on the right lines. Bereaved persons may need watching because in the violence of their grief they may do themselves an injury (cf. Ben. 2. 14. 2 ut frigidam aegris negamus et lugentibus ac sibi iratis ferrum), and the same applies to madmen (cf. Macer, Dig. 1. 18. 14 nam custodes furiosis non ad hoc solum adhibentur ne quid perniciosius ipsi in se moliantur, sed sqq.) or to anyone suspected of suicidal inclinations (cf. Sen. Contr. 3. 5 minantem sibi ipsi (sc. filiam) custodio). It does not apply to persons afraid; they may sometimes be glad of company, but do not require surveillance. My only doubt is whether amentem, seldom used of actual insanity, is the right word. Perhaps dementem or furentem, which makes a better match with the participle lugentem.

Notes: Background : Uncertainty exists as to whether dysplastic polyps in ulcerative colitis should always be managed as dysplasia-associated lesions/masses requiring colectomy, or whether some can be managed by polypectomy. The prevalence of non-inflammatory polyps in ulcerative colitis is unknown.Aim : To compare dysplastic polyp occurrence in patients with ulcerative colitis and in patients without inflammatory bowel disease. Methods : The clinical, endoscopic and histological records of 150 ulcerative colitis patients (median disease duration, 10 years; 57% with pancolitis) undergoing colonoscopy were scrutinized for any polyp history. Two hundred and five patients undergoing colonoscopy for altered bowel habit, but without features suggestive of polyp presence, were used as a control group. Immunohistochemical staining of flat and polypoid mucosa for p16, β-catenin, p53 and cyclo-oxygenase-2 was compared in the two groups. Results : Only six (4%) ulcerative colitis patients had ever had dysplastic polyps. Two had single adenomatous polyps proximal to the colitis segment. Of the four patients with dysplastic polyps within colitic mucosa, two were treated endoscopically, but in two the lesions were considered to be dysplasia-associated lesions/masses and colectomy was advised. In contrast, 24 controls had at least one adenomatous polyp (χ2 = 6.7, P 〈 0.01). Ten (6.7%) ulcerative colitis patients and 24 (12%) control patients had metaplastic polyps (N.S.). Immunohistochemical staining was not discriminatory. Conclusion : Despite the increased cancer risk in long-standing ulcerative colitis, adenomatous polyps arise less frequently in ulcerative colitis patients than in patients without ulcerative colitis.

Notes: Analysis of video recordings of swimming in abyssal grenadiers Coryphaenoides spp. revealed site differences in tail-beat frequencies. At the highly oligotrophic deep central North Pacific (CNP; 5800 m depth) station fishes had significantly lower tail-beat frequencies (0·73 ± 0·02 Hz, mean ± s.e.) than fishes of similar size at the shallower ‘Station F’ (Sta. F; 4400 m depth) beneath the more productive waters of the California Current Upwelling (1·06 ± 0·04 Hz). These behavioural differences may be evidence for the proposed physiological adaptations of Coryphaenoides armatus and Coryphaenoides yaquinae, to different depths and food supply levels. At CNP, smaller fishes (38·9 cm mean LT) were present in autumn than in summer (59·4 cm LT) suggesting large-scale migrations across the abyssal ocean floor despite the observed slow swimming speeds.

Notes: [Auszug] SIR,-Some of the 'flaws'1 in my lateral compression model2 seem to be matters of faith, for example, that the model is "at odds with modern global tectonics", whilst many (including the "petrological observations") are arguable matters of interpretation. Notes: Abstract Eleven new analyses and modes of comendite obsidians are presented, and compared with all available data on similar rocks. Most specimens are aphyric or contain only sparse phenocrysts, most commonly alkali feldspar. The oxides SiO2, Al2O3, Na2O and K2O total over ninety percent by weight in all analyses. Iron, as FeO, is the only other constituent rising above one percent by weight. When the analyses are projected into the system Na2O-K2O-Al2O3-SiO2, oceanic and continental samples group differently. Oceanic specimens have a compositional spread ranging from trachytic to the quartz-feldspar cotectic zone, consistent with derivation through a trachyte magma stem. Continental comendites show a strong correlation with the experimentally determined quartz-feldspar minima along a path of increasing peralkalinity. These differences presumably reflect the contrasting environments of magma generation, and suggest an origin by partial melting within the continental crust for the continental comendite obsidians.

Notes: Abstract Chlorpromazine exerts a significantly higher impairment on the performance of C57BL/6By than on BALB/cBy inbred mice pretrained in an active avoidance task. The effects of the drug on this measure assessed in these two strains, their reciprocal F1 hybrids, their recombinant inbred strains, and two C57BL/6By congenic lines indicate that at least two genes modulate the action of chlorpromazine on avoidance behavior. It was possible to characterize one of the loci modulating the effect of chlorpromazine on avoidance performance. We assign the symbol Cpz. The locus is in chromosome 9, Linkage Group II.
