Notes: [Auszug] Glaciers often erode, transport and deposit sediment much more rapidly than nonglacial environments, with implications for the evolution of glaciated mountain belts and their associated sedimentary basins. But modelling such glacial processes is difficult, partly because stabilizing feedbacks ...

Notes: [Auszug] In the intestine, compound P has never been found at concentrations above 1 ng/g of tissue, although it is the predominant form of the vitamin found in the intestine after a physiological dose of cholecalciferol. Because of the scarcity of material, classical bioassays based on the changes in bone ...

Notes: Abstract We have utilized the enhancement of thermal conductivity by Poiseuille flow of the phonon gas to obtain highly sensitive measurements of phonon scattering by isotopic impurities in single crystals of helium. Crystal orientation, size, and quality may be inferred from the thermal conductivity data themselves. Our hcp 4 He crystals were grown at a constant pressure of 85.1 atm using apparatus and techniques that made possible some control over crystal orientation. An isotopic impurity concentration of 1.0×10−5 decreases the peak conductivity in these crystals by a factor of 1.9 along a direction perpendicular to thec axis. In the Poiseuille region a relaxation time limit has been achieved experimentally that allows our data to be fitted as a function of temperature and concentration with only one parameter. The observed scattering strength is a factor of 2.7 greater than can be explained in terms of mass-defect scattering alone. A number of current theories are examined in the light of this result. Our pure 4 He data strongly support aT −3 dependence for the normal-process relaxation time. Measurements of the thermal conductivity parallel to thec axis reveal no anisotropy in either the normal-process relaxation time or the isotopic scattering strength.

Notes: Abstract Measurements of the attenuation of 10-MHz compressional waves in liquid3He along the melting curve reveal a sharp peak at the A transition (2.7 mK). In a magnetic field this feature splits into two attenuation peaks, separated by a temperature difference proportional to H. The shapes of these peaks, though changing markedly betweenH=0 and 1 kOe, are all consistent with the A phase being an anisotropic BCS-type superfluid and inconsistent with an isotropic gap model. Field-dependent time variations in the attenuation and various transient effects provide further clues to the nature of this phase. A third sharp attenuation peak—at the B transition (≲2 mK)—possibly represents scattering from a liquid-liquid interface. It is, in any event, consistent with an isotropic superfluid B phase. Velocity changes have been observed at both A and B transitions, indicating velocities in the B phase significantly less than that of first sound at the same pressure.

Notes: Abstract Measurements between 35 and 110 mK along the melting curve indicate that in the normal Fermi liquid region the viscosity of 3 He is given by (ηT 2 )−1 =a−bT n withn=1.0. The measured constants area=0.816 andb=4.43 for η in micropoise andT in Kelvin. Very little solid could be formed in this particular apparatus without immobilizing the vibrating wire viscometer. Patterns were observed in the solidification, however, which suggest that such a device could be operated at much lower temperatures in a compressional cooling cell of appropriate design. A systematic study was made of the excitation of different vibrational modes of the viscometer by varying the magnetic field orientation and the nature of the driving current. The use of tone burst and dc, as well as CW, excitation currents allows the same viscometer to be used over a wide range of viscosities.
