Notizen: Plots of five intermediate-heading varieties of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) [AberDove, Belramo and Glen (diploid); Twins (tetraploid); and AberExcel (tetraploid hybrid)] were continuously stocked with sheep to maintain a target sward surface height of 40–50 mm. Daily dry matter (DM) intake was significantly different (F-value = 0·032) between the varieties, with the tetraploid hybrid AberExcel having the highest values for daily DM intake and intake rate during eating. Amongst the diploid varieties, intake rate tended to be higher for sheep grazing Glen. The varieties comprised a wide range in potential growth habit, from the relatively prostrate, highly tillered Glen to the more-erect AberExcel and there were differences between them in the vertical distribution of leaves within the sward canopy. The leaves of AberExcel weighed 3·6 mg DM cm−2 leaf area in contrast to the other varieties (4·3–5·3 mg DM cm−2 leaf area) resulting in a high leaf area index (LAI) in relation to the green leaf mass. Intake rate was not significantly correlated with extended tiller and sheath tube lengths, partition of herbage mass, number of tillers per square metre or LAI. However, canonical variates analysis showed that there were significant differences between the varieties for the morphological and chemical factors examined. Other factors also need to be explored to explain these differences in ingestive behaviour in order to identify plant traits that are correlated with herbage intake rate. These are needed for varieties destined for grazing use, both during the breeding programme and their subsequent evaluation.

Notizen: Patellar tendon ultrasound appearance is commonly used in clinical practice to diagnose patellar tendinopathy and guide management. Using a longitudinal study design we examined whether or not the presence of a hypoechoic ultrasonographic lesion in an asymptomatic patellar tendon conferred a risk for developing jumper’s knee compared with a tendon that was ultrasonographically normal. Ultrasonographic, symptomatic and anthropometric assessment was completed at baseline and followup. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed on four tendons that resolved ultrasonographically in the study period. Forty-six patellar tendons were followed over 47±11.8 months. Eighteen tendons were hypoechoic at baseline and 28 were ultrasonographically normal. Five tendons resolved ultrasonographically in the study period. Magnetic resonance imaging in four of these tendons was normal. Seven normal patellar tendons at baseline developed a hypoechoic area but only two became symptomatic. Analysis of ultrasonography at baseline and clinical outcome with Fisher’s exact test shows there is no association between baseline ultrasound changes and symptoms at followup. In this study there is no statistically significant relationship between ultrasonographic patellar tendon abnormalities and clinical outcome in elite male athletes. Management of jumper’s knee should not be solely based on ultrasonographic appearance; clinical assessment remains the cornerstone of appropriate management.

Notizen: Following a detailed information technology survey in the South West Deanery, an Internet educational programme in reproductive medicine was constructed, delivered and assessed. The course followed a problem-based approach using case studies, using an education website and electronic mail (e-mail) to communicate between trainees and trainers. Independent evaluation revealed a high level of satisfaction for both trainees and trainers with an increase in trainees’ confidence to deal with patients following the course. This study suggests that the Internet may be used effectively to deliver postgraduate medical education, if the training programme is designed appropriately to computer infrastructure and the computer literacy of the users.

Notizen: SYNOPSIS. Euglena gracilis (strain Z) was grown auto-trophically at different light intensities, saturating or limiting for cell division. Adaptation to culture at each light intensity was gauged from division rate, mass, protein, photosynthetic pigments, nucleic acids, volume, paramylum, lipids, respiration, and photosynthesis. Illumination above 1200 foot-, candles was saturating for all aspects of cell growth; the highest intensity examined (3,000 ft-c) slightly inhibited cell division. Intensities between 400 and 1200 ft-c were saturating for all except photosynthesis and paramylum accumulation. Intensities less than about 200 ft-c became limiting for all fractions except protein, which remained constant over the range 120–3000 ft-c, dropping, however, at 65 ft-c. Concentration of photosynthetic pigments increased as light intensity decreased.Absolute synthetic rates were estimated for the individual Euglena cell for the measured cell constituents. While most followed a predictable pattern, increasing with light intensity to saturating levels, the synthetic rates for the pigments went through maxima at 190 ft-c. Since fixed carbon in limiting light is so apportioned that protein is synthesized to the exclusion of paramylum, one concludes that the energy requirements for cell growth (measured as protein synthesis), and to a lesser extent cell division, have a higher priority than do those activities concerned more directly with maintenance.
