Notes: Patients with the idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) may develop associated skin disorders. We describe a patient who had xerosis since birth, but who first developed symptoms of aquagenic pruritus soon after he presented with HES. Photochemotherapy with psoralen and UVA treatment reduced his peripheral blood eosinophil count. The good response to treatment suggests that there was a close relationship between the dermatosis and the blood disorder.

Notes: This paper describes a numerical solution procedure to study heat and moisture transfer processes by two-dimensional natural convection phenomena in grain stores with arbitrary geometries. This enables grain storage technologists to investigate the design and performance of grain stores in which the grain surface is peaked, as in bunker storage, for example. Momentum transfer is described by an elliptic partial differential equation, which governs the behavior of the stream function. Using an algebraic grid generation technique, the governing equations are transformed into a body-fitted rectangular coordinate system that allows coincidence of all boundary lines with a coordinate line. Numerical solutions of the resulting equations are obtained using an alternating direction implicit method. Results from numerical experiments on a peaked bulk of stored grain retained between two vertical walls are obtained that show the magnitude and directions of convection currents and contours of temperature, moisture, dry matter loss and chemical pesticide concentrations.

Notes: Abstract Methionine sulphoximine resistant (Msxr) glutamine synthetase (GS) strain and ethylene diamine resistant (Eda1) GS strains of Nostoc muscorum did not show a cross-resistance relationship. The parents, Msxr-GS and Het Nif strains mutated spontaneously to the Eda1 phenotype, and the results of spontaneous mutation frequency suggested a role of the gln A allele in control of its mutation frequency of Edar-GS phenotype. Edar clones comprised two functionally distinct classes, the Edars class having severely defective GS activity and excreting ammonia and the Edart class having a slightly defective GS activity and assimilating EDA like a fixed nitrogen source.

Notes: Abstract Glyphosate was considerably more growth inhibitory to N2-assimilating than to ammonium-assimilating cultures of N. muscorum. The herbicide, while inhibiting nitrogenase activity and ammonium [14C]-methylammonium) uptake activity caused significant increase in the biosynthetic activity of in vivo glutamine synthetase (GS) in N2-assimilating or ammonium-assimilating cultures and nearly 50% derepression of heterocyst formation and nitrogenase activity in ammonium assimilating cultures. The differential toxicity of the herbicide to N2-fixing cultures led us to use this herbicide as selective agent to isolate a class of mutant clones on ammonium-supplemented medium which lacked heterocyst differentiation (Het−), nitrogenase activity (Nif−) and ammonium [14C]-methylammonium) uptake activity (Amt−). It is concluded that heterocyst differentiation, nitrogenase activity and ammonium uptake activity are all under the regulatory control of common genetic determinants in the cyanobacterium.

Notes: A model for prediction of thermal conductivity of fruit juices was developed. The model was based on the concept of thermal resistances in parallel and compared with other models and experimental values. Effect of temperature and solid concentration on thermal conductivity was discussed. Extension of the model to predict thermal conductivity of fruit juices below the freezing temperature was briefly discussed. The model gave error of less than 10% from the experimental values for juices for which such values were available.

Notes: Abstract: In this paper, properties of the low and the high spin states in 112Sb have been studied in the framework of Interacting Boson Fermion Fermion Model. A surface delta plus spin-spin type of interaction has been taken as the residual interaction between the odd neutron and the odd proton. Energy values, magnetic moments of the ground state and the isomeric 8− state, E2/M1 mixing ratios of some of the low-lying transitions and log ft values for the Gamow-Teller transitions in 112Sb →112Sn and 111Sb →111Sn decay have been calculated and are compared with the experimental results. The band based on the configuration π g-1 9/2π g2 7/2⊗ν h11/2 is obtained in this calculation by coupling the proton in the g9/2 and the neutron in the h11/2 orbital to the deformed band of 110Sn. The B(M1)/B(E2) ratios and branching ratios for the transitions in this band have also been calculated and compared with the experimental results.

Notes: Abstract Exposure of thylakoid membranes to high temperature in dark leads to the degradation of D1 protein. Maximum degradation of D1 protein occurred at 45 °C. Using N-terminal specific D1 antibody, a 23 kDa fragment of D1 protein was detected. The degradation of D1 protein could be prevented both by radical scavengers and inhibitors of serine protease and metallo-protease. These results suggest that degradation of D1 protein during exposure of thylakoid membranes to high temperature in dark is catalyzed by protease.

Notes: Abstract Changes in the starch and sucrose contents, and the sucrose phosphate synthase, acid invertase, and starch phosphorylase activities were studied in the seedlings of salt sensitive and salt tolerant rice cultivars growing under two NaCl concentrations (7 and 14 dS m-1) for 20 d. Under salinity, the starch content in roots declined more in salt sensitive cvs. Ratna and Jaya than in salt tolerant cvs. CSR-1 and CSR-3 and was unchanged in shoots. The contents of reducing and non-reducing sugars, and the activity of sucrose phosphate synthase was increased more in the sensitive than in the tolerant cultivars. Acid invertase activity decreased in shoots of the salt tolerant cultivars, whereas increased in salt sensitive cultivars. Starch phosphorylase activity decreased in all cultivars.
