Notes: We elucidate the behavior of the operator (p2+m2)1/2−α/r near the critical value α=αc where it ceases to be bounded below, by obtaining a family H(z) of operators which is self-adjoint holomorphic in a domain including all real z〉−αc−αc′, and such that H(αc−α)(α≤αc) is just the operator (p2+m2)1/2−α/r or its Friedrich extension, while H(−αc−α)(αc′〈α〈αc) is another self-adjoint extension. The operators H(z) (z real) are shown to be positive, and to have only discrete spectrum below m. The eigenvalues are then analytic functions of αc−α near α=αc (and become the eigenvalues of a non-self-adjoint operator when α〉αc). We show that these eigenvalues cannot vanish, but that the lowest eigenvalue of H(−αc−α) goes to zero when α→αc′. The L〉0 eigenvalues are analytic in α at α=αc. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract We study the hadronic decay of q $$\bar q$$ g hybrid mesons. To that aim we establish the connection between the diatomic-molecule like wave functions and the standard q $$\bar q$$ g wave functions. We show that inSU(6) approximation TE hybrids cannot decay intoPP, PV, VV channels while TM hybrids are weakly coupled to ψγ. Hence only TE-TM mixed hybrids are easy to see in ψ → γX. We show that hydrids are weakly mixed with quarkonia. We discuss the possible nature of the ξ(2.2) resonance and the ways of detecting exotic 1−+ q $$\bar q$$ g bound states.

Notes: Abstract In the Kobayashi-Maskawa model we compute a new contribution to the neutron electric dipole moment induced byCP violating flavour-changing transitions of the typess→d+gluon+γ through heavy quark loops. This contribution, essentially given by the triangle anomaly graph, is by itself gauge invariant. We obtain from this mechanismD n /e=3.10−32 cm, one order of magnitude below our previous estimate from usual penguin diagram contributions.

Notes: Abstract It has been shown by Finger, Horn and Mandula in the Tamm-Dancoff approximation that Coulomb exchange induces vacuum instability for α s bigger than some critical value. We show here in all generality that the critical coupling is lower using the Bogolioubov-Valatin variational method. For Coulomb exchange we find $$\tfrac{4}{3}\alpha _s^{crit} = 1$$ instead of $$\tfrac{4}{3}\alpha _s^{crit} = \tfrac{3}{2}$$ , and adding transverse gluon exchange with the Breit interaction, $$\tfrac{4}{3}\alpha _s^{crit} = \tfrac{1}{3}$$ . It is remarkable that these values of α s crit are not far from the range of perturbative QCD.

Notes: Abstract We point out that one finds in the literature two different results for the spin-orbit term in radiative transitions of hadrons. We analyze the problem and find that, besides the term usually quoted $$ - ie\omega (\sigma \times p) \cdot \varepsilon _\gamma /4m^2 \cong e[\nabla (V_v + V_s ) \times \sigma ] \cdot \varepsilon _\gamma /4m^2 $$ (V v ,V s are the Lorentz vector and scalar pieces of the binding potential and ω the photon energy), there is another term that gives as final resulte(∇V v ×σ)·ε γ/2m 2. We use for our proof two different approaches: the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation, and the method of Brodsky and Primack based on a dipole formula. In hadrons, the electric field has two pieces, the photon radiation field, and a strong interaction piece, of order 1/e relative to the former. These two pieces are at the origin of the two spin-orbit terms at the order (v/c)3.

Notes: Abstract To help the difficult determination of the angle γ of the unitarity triangle, Aleksan, Dunietz and Kayser have proposed the modes of the typeK − D s + , common toB s and $$\bar B_s $$ . We point out that it is possible to gain in statistics by a sum over all modes with ground state mesons in the final state, i.e.K − D s + ,K *− D s + ,K − D s *+ ,K * D s * . The delicate point is the relative phase of these different contributions to the dilution factorD of the time dependent asymmetry. Each contribution toD is proportional to a product $$F^{cb} F^{ub} f_{D_s } f_K $$ whereF denotes form factors andf decay constants. Within a definite phase convention (i.e. for example the one defined by the heavy quark symmetry in the limit of heavy quarks), lattice calculations do not show any change in sign when extrapolating to light quarks the form factors and decay constants. Then, we can show that all modes contribute constructively to the dilution factor, except theP-waveK * D s *+ , which is small. Quark model arguments based on wave function overlaps also confirm this stability in sign. By summing over all these models we find a gain of a factor 6 in statistics relatively toK − D s + . The dilution factor for the sumD tot is remarkably stable for theoretical schemes that are not in very strong conflict with data onB→ψK(K *) or extrapolated from semileptonic charm form factors, givingD tot≥0.6, always close toD(K − D s + ).
