    Notes: Abstract Field measurements of CH4 emission from rice paddy field during cultivation periods were performed at all of 47 Japanese prefectures under the project of ‘Research for evaluation of CH4 and N2O emissions from agricultural land, and improvement methods of soil, water and fertilizer management’ conducted by Agricultural Production Bureau, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. Although this project was carried out at 159 fields, the data of 132 fields were used for this report because other 27 fields had not enough data to be suitable for the statistics analyses. The measurements at rice paddy fields in various locations in Japan showed that there were large temporal variations of CH4 flux and that the fluxes differed markedly with climate, characteristics of soil and paddy, application of organic matter and mineral fertilizer, and agricultural management practices. These data mainly indicated that CH4 emission from Gley soils was greater than those from other soil types such as Andosols, Upland soils, fine-textured Lowland soils, medium and coarse-textured Lowlands soils and gravelly Lowland soils, and that water and organic matter managements influenced CH4 emission. It is suggested that midsummer drainage treatment suppressed while the application of fresh organic matter such as rice straw and wheat straw enhanced CH4 emission, respectively.

    Notes: Summary Surface anatomy scanning (SAS) is a powerful technique that uses T2-weighted magnetic resonance images (MRI) to visualize brain surface structures, and to precisely localize subcortical lesions. To overcome technical limitations of this method, synthesized SAS (SSAS) superimposes MR angiography (MRA) data on the SAS images. We describe our initial experience with surgical planning for the resection of metastases at the sensorimotor region in 5 patients using SSAS. Neurological deficits were assessed before and after surgical resection. Although 4 of 5 patients had mild to severe neurological deficits before surgery, three became symptom-free and no patient had an increased deficit after surgery. Our results undoubtedly provide palliative surgery for sensorimotor metastases. As SSAS is non-invasive and requires a short scanning time, this method could become a useful technique for the routine pre-operative simulation for surgery on brain surface lesions such as sensorimotor metastases.

    Notes: Summary This paper highlights two interesting cases of radial clipping of large aneurysms at the vertebro-basilar junction accompanied by a vascular anomaly, consisting of fenestration of the split basilar artery at its origin. Description of the inner and outer surface of the aneurysm were obtained pre-operatively, from analysis by 3D CT and 3D CT endoscopy of the form of the neck, parent vessels of the vertebral arteries on both sides, basilar artery and split basilar artery, as well as other details of branching. The neck exhibited a broad base in both cases. The height of the neck extended to the internal acoustic meatus, and it was possible to expose the circumference of the aneurysmal neck, peripheral basilar artery and both vertebral arteries proximally with an anterior transpetrosal approach. Based on the size of the aneurysm and the site being the anterior surface of the brain stem, clipping (consisting of interruption of the occluded portion and reconstruction of the parent vessels) was performed. In the first case it was achieved protecting the brain by hypothermia and barbiturates under deep hypothermia with extracorporal circulation, and in the second case, a state of circulatory arrest was used. This paper documents the report of two cases along with other cases treated so far.

    Notes: Summary Surgery for highly placed basilar bifurcation aneurysms is one of the most difficult operations in neurosurgery. Specific surgical techniques have been developed including the temporopolar, zygomatic, transzygomatic subtemporal, transclinoid trans-sellar transcavernous, and trans third ventricular approaches. The authors present some technical advances which have been developed for the transcristagalli translamina terminalis approach for the treatment of this aneurysm.

    Notes: Summary Haematoma in the basal cistern was classified into five grades. A little or moderate haematoma (1 + or 2 +) disappeared from the basal cistern in 3 or 4 days, however much or severe haematoma (3 + or 4 +) remained over a week. Vasospasm occurred in a high number of the cases in which the haematoma was recognized in the basal cistern later than 4 days after SAH not only in operative case but also in conservative case. However vasospasm occurred rarely in cases with early operation within 24 hours after onset except for cases with severe packed haematoma (4+) in the basal cistern.

    Notes: Summary.  A full-length cDNA copy of the genome of the pathogenic strain, J1’73, of swine vesicular disease virus (SVDV) was constructed and inserted into the plasmid pSVL to generate a recombinant plasmid pSVLSJ1. Infectious virus was produced following transfection of cultured mammalian cells with the plasmid. The recovered virus had the same in vitro properties as the parental strain with regard to antigenicity, plaque size on IBRS-2 cells and single-step growth. Pigs were experimentally infected with the parental virus, J1’73 strain, and viruses recovered from cells transfected with the plasmids pSVLSJ1 and pSVLS00 [Inoue T, Yamaguchi S, Saeki T, Sekiguchi K, J Gen Virol 71: 1 835–1 838 (1990)] corresponding to the pathogenic (J1’73) and non-pathogenic (H/3’76) Japanese strains of the SVDV, respectively. All pigs inoculated with the virus recovered from pSVLSJ1 produced clinical signs of similar severity to those inoculated with the parental J1’73 strain. In contrast, pigs inoculated with the virus recovered from pSVLS00 did not show any clinical signs. Viruses recovered from cells transfected with either pSVLSJ1 or pSVLS00 therefore retained the in vitro characteristics and the in vivo pathogenicity of their respective parental strains.

    Notes: Abstract To clarify the dynamic behavior of the anaerobic acid reactor in response to pH changes, a continuous cultivation was performed. By stepwise shifting the culture pH in the acid reactor from 6.0 to 8.0, the main products were changed from butyric acid to acetic and propionic acids. This phenomenon was reproducible, reversible and was not affected by the dilution rate. It was considered that the dominant microbial populations changed in the acid reactor due to the pH shift.
