    Leadership and power relationships based on culture and gender (1998)

    Notes: Leadership and power are often used to influence people's behavior. However, little is known about the degree and directional relationship between these two constructs and gender. Equally unknown is the degree of impact that culture and gender together may have on such a relationship. This paper attempts to establish an empirical relationship between these two constructs and culture along with gender. Baba and Ace's modified instruments on leadership and Hinkin and Schriesheim's instrument on five sources of power were used in surveying 486 students from four business schools in Korea and the USA to derive functional relationships between leadership and power. Results suggest there is a statistically significant relationship between power and leadership and that gender has an impact on that relationship. However, this study does not support the contention that gender plays an important role in cross-cultural environments; instead, it plays an important role only when considered within a specific culture.

    Notes: Abstract Synthetic sex pheromone of the pea mothCydia nigricana. (E,E)-8,10-dodecadien-1-yl acetate (E8,E10–12 : Ac), was applied in a 3-ha pea field at a rate of 17 g/ha, in two different dispenser formulations. Aerial concentrations within pea canopy, as determined by a field electroantennogram (EAG) apparatus, were 2 and 3 ng/m3 in the two dispenser treatments. The validity of the EAG measurements was corroborated by sampling of field air, followed by gas chromatographic quantification ofE8,E10–12 : Ac. Males were attracted to fresh dispensers releasingE8,E10–12 : Ac plus less than 2% of the antagonisticE, Z; Z, E; andZ, Z isomers. Two days after placement, the proportion of these isomers had increased to 6%. Males were then no longer attracted to the dispensers, but were observed to fly out of the treated field. Male attraction to calling females was almost entirely suppressed, and attraction to traps baited with synthetic pheromone was significantly reduced. Larval infestation in the pheromone-treated field was 2%, compared to 36% in a control field.

    Notes: An der Haut manifestieren sich die häufigsten Malignome des Menschen, die epidermalen Plattenepithel- und Basalzellkarzinome, sowie auch maligne Melanome mit steigender Inzidenz. Darüber hinausgehend sind eine beträchtliche Zahl weiterer, verschiedenartigster, jedoch vergleichsweise seltener Tumore am Integument zu beobachten. Das vor allem histologisch bunte Bild resultiert aus Gewebsanteilen meso- und ektodermalen Ursprungs, welche in ausgesprochener Differenzierungsvielfalt die Haut und Unterhaut konstituieren. Bedenkt man beispielsweise, daß sich allein die Haar-Talgdrüsen-Einheit, eines der prominentesten Adnexorgane der Haut, aus mehr als 20 verschiedenen Zellpopulationen mit teilweise pluripotenten Differenzierungseigenschaften zusammensetzt, wird die histogenetische Potenz des Integuments zu einer extrem facettenreichen Tumorausprägung verständlich. In diesem Artikel sollen die häufigsten dieser seltenen malignen Hauttumoren systematisch nach ihren Ursprungsgeweben dargestellt werden, dabei übergehend von den Neubildungen epithelialen zu denen mesenchymalen Ursprungs und abschließend mit den erst sekundär in der Haut enstehenden Malignomen.

    Practicability and safety of dipyridamole cardiac imaging in patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (1999)

We tested the practicability of dipyridamole myocardial nitrogen-13 ammonia positron emission tomography (dipyridamole 13NH3 PET) for the perioperative risk assessment of coronary artery disease (CAD) in a cohort of patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) undergoing lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS). Twenty consecutive LVRS candidates, 13 men and 7 women (mean age 57±2 years), without symptoms of CAD were prospectively studied by dipyridamole 13NH3 PET. Side-effects and overall tolerance were assessed by a questionnaire and visual analogue scale. Repeated pulmonary function tests were performed before and 4, 12, 16 and 30 minutes after dipyridamole injection. All dipyridamole 13NH3 PET studies were negative for CAD. Seventeen patients underwent LVRS without cardiac complications; three patients did not undergo LVRS for other reasons. Nine patients suffered intolerable dyspnoea requiring i.v. aminophylline. Mean FEV1 decreased significantly after dipyridamole infusion: in nine patients the reduction in FEV1exceeded 15% from baseline. We found that dipyridamole is not well tolerated and causes significant bronchoconstriction in patients with severe COPD. Although all dipyridamole-induced side effects can be promptly reversed by aminophylline, dipyridamole cannot be recommended as a pharmacological stress in this setting.
