Notes: Abstract The catalytic activity of Pt/γ-Al2O3 membrane reactors, prepared using mesitylene solvated platinum atoms as source of active Pt particles, has been compared with that of analogously obtained Pt/γ-Al2O3 powders in the liquid phase hydrogenation of p-chloronitrobenzene. A largely different behaviour has been observed, the membrane reactor acting as a H2 richer system.

Notes: Abstract Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), single photon emission tomography (SPET), and positron emission tomography (PET) using [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose were used in combination with scalp and scalp-video EEGs in a group of 30 pediatric patients with drug resistant epilepsy (DRE) in order to identify patients who could benefit from neurosurgical approach. Seizures were classified according to the consensus criteria of The International League Against Epilepsy. In three patients infantile spasms (IS) were diagnosed; 13 subjects were affected by different types of generalized seizures, associated with complex partial seizures (CPS) in three. In the other 14 patients partial seizures, either simple (SPS) or complex, were present. A localized abnormality was demonstrated in one patient with IS and in three patients with generalized seizures. Of the group of 14 subjects with CPS, MRI and CT were normal in 7, but SPET or PET indicated focal hypoperfusion or hypometabolism concordant with the localization of the EEG abnormalities. In 5 of the other 7 patients anatomical and functional imaging and EEG findings were concordant for a localized abnormality. It can be concluded that functional imaging combined with scalp EEGs appears to be superior to the use of only CT and MRI for selecting children with epilepsy in whom a surgical approach can be considered, in particular when CPS resistant to therapy are present.

Notes: 2-Hexylamino-4-[(S)-1-(1-naphthyl)ethylamino]-6-L-valyl-L-valyl-L-valine isopropylester-1,3,5-triazine (1), a molecule characterized by two different chiral selectors, and 2-hexylamino-4,6-bis-L-valyl-L-valyl-L-valine isopropylester-1,3,5-triazine (2) and 2-ethoxy-4-hexylamino-6-[(S)-1-(1-naphthyl) ethylamino]-1,3,5-triazine (3), systems in which a single kind of chiral selector is present, have been prepared. The enantiodiscriminating ability in solution of the three compounds toward the N-3,5-dinitrobenzoyl derivatives of 1-phenylethylamine (4) or valine methylester (5) has been investigated by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy: 1 shows an improved versatility, relative to 2 and 3, as a chiral solvating agent for NMR spectroscopy. On the basis of the indications obtained, the usefulness of 2-chloro-4-[(S)-1-(1-naphthyl)ethylamino]-6-L-val-L-val-L-valine isopropylester-1,3,5-triazine (1a), a direct precursor of 1, as chiral solvating agent for the determination by NMR of the enantiomeric compositions of derivatives of amines, amino alcohols, amino acids, and carboxyl acids bearing a 3,5-dinitrophenyl moiety, has been demonstrated.
