Notes: The upconversion of infrared radiation to shorter wavelengths by Er3+ ions in heavy-metal fluoride glasses, some doped with Yb3+, has been studied over a wide intensity range and for various excitation wavelengths. The upconversion efficiency measured at room temperature varies linearly or quadratically with intensity and saturates at 100 W/cm2 or higher, depending on emission wavelength. For 4 mol % ErF3 in BaF2/ThF4, the 4I11/2 to 4I15/2 transition is over 10% efficient for 400 W/cm2 of absorbed 1.5-μm power, i.e., for 4I15/2 to 4I13/2 excitation. A rate equation model and Judd–Ofelt analysis of data for the glasses doped with just Er3+ provide an understanding of the upconversion process while yielding values for Er3+ energy-transfer rates and excited-state populations. These results could be used to develop glasses for lasing and as infrared optical detectors.

The survival rate, NED-survival rate and local tumour control rate were 84%, 71% and 83% at 5 years. Anorectal function was retained in 33 of 41 patients (80%). We observed severe acute toxicity including three deaths, but very little late morbidity. The only marginally significant prognostic factor (P=0.06) for local tumour control was T-stage. NED-survival was significantly affected (P=0.02) by reduction of chemotherapy during the second course.

Notes: [Auszug] Recently, we have had the opportunity to study a 46-year-old Negro male with a persistent external pancreatic fistula. Approximately 1,000-1,500 ml. of pure pancreatic secretion was discharged daily through the fistula as a colourless, slightly turbid fluid, which ranged in pH from 8-15 to 8-52. ...

Notes: Abstract Six female and 39 male outpatients, who suffered from acutely inflamed pilonidal sinus were treated by sclerotherapy between January 1985 and December 1988. Under local anaesthesia, 1–2 ml 80% phenol was injected into the sinus. The phenol, which was allowed to act for a minute, was washed out by irrigating the sinus with physiological common-salt solution. Of the questionnaire sent to all 45 patients, 37 proved suitable for evaluation. Complete healing occurred in 22 cases (59,8%). The healing time was 6.2 weeks on average. Besides a rather frequently observed transient reddening as a result of the local inflammation caused by the phenol, 5 patients developed an abcess which needed operative treatment. This study does not support the encouraging results of previous series.

Notes: Summary A reversible conductive hearing loss produced during the first 4 weeks post partum caused marked alterations in the development of click-evoked auditory brainstem (ABR) and middle latency (MLR) responses in guinea pigs. The early component PI in the ABR in controls showed adult-like latencies at the time of birth, while the later ABR components PIII and PV and all components investigated in the MLR showed postnatal development characterized by a shortened latency that persisted for the whole period of investigation. The course of the ABR latencies showed the sharpest decrease during the first 2–3 weeks of life, while that for the MLR took place during the first 5 weeks. In addition to the increased ABR thresholds and lengthened ABR latencies due to the conductive hearing loss, development of the ABR inter-peak latencies (IPL) and MLR latencies was retarded. The IPL reached control values 1 week after the end of the deprivation phase, while the delay in MLR started later (4th week) and lasted longer than did that in the ABR. These findings showed that a long-lasting postnatal conductive hearing loss does not generate sustained impairment at the level of the brainstem but can evoke longer-lasting deficiencies at higher stations of the auditory pathway.

Notes: Abstract The morphological changes in rat facial muscles were evaluated after permanent denervation and were compared with findings after immediate reinnervation. Thirty rats underwent transection of the left and right facial nerves immediately followed by hypoglossal-facial nerve anastomosis on the right side (muscular reinnervation) and removal of 8–10 mm of the facial plexus on the left side (permanent muscular denervation). Levator labii muscle samples of both sides were collected sequentially at 2, 6, 7, 10, 20, and 24 weeks after surgery and submitted to routine histological and enzyme histochemical staining procedures. In normal levator labii muscles a typical “chessboard” pattern was found, with type I fibers being smaller than type II fibers. These latter fibers also were more prevalent than the type I fibers. Among the type II fiber subtypes, the type IIB fibers were larger and more frequent. Two weeks after surgery, there were no differences between denervated facial muscles and those undergoing reinnervation. Both showed atrophic myofibers among normal-sized fibers and slight fibrosis. Those muscles denervated for more than 2 weeks displayed increasing fiber atrophy with frequent loss of typability, as well as proliferation of connective tissue and fat cells in perimysial and endomysial sites. After denervation for 20 weeks only a few atrophic fibers were found in wide areas of fibrosis and fat cells. Following nerve anastomosis the reinnervated levator labii muscle showed much less fiber atrophy. Regrowth to normal fiber diameters was found with only a few atrophic myofibers 10 weeks after anastomosis although a moderate fibrosis predominated at perimysial sites. Reinnervated facial muscle fibers displayed a typical type-grouping pattern and also frequent lack of typability.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Authors investigated myoneural synapses of the tetanic and tonic part of the iliofibular muscle of the frog. The cholinesterase activity was demonstrated by means of the Koelle-Gerebtzoff method; the myelin sheaths were stained with Sudan black. For the estimation of the enzyme activity a combined microphotometric and planimetric procedure was used. It could be established that the subneural apparatuses of the tetanic muscle fibres correspond to the palisadelike lamellar structures exerting an intensive enzyme activity already previously described byCouteaux, whereas on the tonic muscle fibres one can exclusively find grapelike subneural apparatuses showing a far less strong cholinesterase activity. Dependence of the different types of subneural apparatuses on the “large” or “small” nerve systems (Kuffler) respectively, was demonstrated not only through their topographic localisation, but also with calibre determinations of the corresponding motoric nerve fibres. On the basis of the results the relation between the contraction type and the intensity of the enzyme activity, as well as the morphological assumption of the so-called “nonpropagating impulses” is discussed.
