Notizen: Thermoplastic additives tend to promote the phase separation during the reaction of unsaturated polyester resins. Consequently, they reduce the amount of shrinkage during curing. Several thermoplastic additives which resulted in significant different microstructure of cured resins were investigated. The effects of microstr acture formation on the sol-gel transition, reaction kinetics, and gelation time were studied. The mechanism of microstructure formation and causes of macro-gelation were explained by the influence of thermoplastic additives on the particle formation rate and inter-particle reaction rate during curing.

Notizen: A series of kinetic and rheological measurements were carried out using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and a Rheometrics Dynamic Analyzer (RDA). The effects of temperature, inhibitor level, initiator level, and initiator type on the curing of unsaturated polyester resins were investigated. Two models based on the free radical polymerization mechanism were developed for predicting the time to reach liquid-solid transition. These models adapted a concept that gelation occurred at a critical radical concentration. The applicability of these models was compared to that of a statistical analysis.

Notizen: In this study, an interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) based on a polyurethane (PU) and a partially end-capped unsaturated polyester (UPE) was prepared. The reaction-induced phase separation process of the IPN was studied using a phase contrast optical microscope and a transmission electron microscope (TEM), while reaction kinetics and onset of gelation were determined by a differential scanning calorimeter and a rheometer respectively. Except at low temperatures, the phase separation patterns were found to follow the spinodal decomposition mechanism. An interconnected phase developed quickly and was followed by coalescence of the periodic phase to form droplet/matrix type of morphology. A second level of phase separation also occurred within both the droplet and the matrix phases in some cases. The domain sizes resulting from both levels of phase separation gradually increased until the structure was locked by chemical gelation. Reaction temperature, PU reaction rate, and UPE reaction rate all had significant effects on the final morphology of the formed IPNs.

Notizen: A free radical copolymerization model is proposed for simulating the reaction rates and conversions of styrene monomer and unsaturated polyester resins during curing. This model is based on film theory in which the rate constants reflect both reaction and diffusion resistances. Differential scanning calorimetry in combination with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy is used to measure the overall and individual reactivities of reacting species. Model parameters are determined from experimental data. The applicability of this model is demonstrated in a cure simulation.

Notizen: An experimental and theoretical study of reaction injection molding (RIM) of polyurea was conducted in this work. A lab-scale RIM machine was used to carry out the polyurea bulk polymerizations. A “free-table” viscometer was designed to measure the fast rheological changes and liquid-solid transition. A mathematical model was proposed to simulate the fast reaction and rheological changes in the polyurea RIM process. The parameters of this model were determined based on the solution polymerization data from FTIR and Haake rheometer measurements. Combined with an appropriate heat transfer equation, this model predicts fairly well the adiabatic temperature and viscosity rises of bulk polyurea reactions in RIM.

Notizen: A polyurethane (PU) is compared with the polyurethane-unsaturated polyester (PU-UPE) hybrid to examine the changes of the resin-fiber interphase in the presence of a sizing compatible component, UPE, in the matrix resin. The formation of resin-fiber interphase is critical in structural reaction injection molding (SRIM) and resin transfer molding (RTM) because resin solidification (i.e., gelation and vitrification) occurs in seconds (SRIM) or minutes (RTM). Kinetic (DSC, FTIR spectroscopy), mechanical (single fiber test, fracture surface analysis), and microscopic (birefringence, SEM) studies were used to analyze the interface. Kinetic results indicate poor chemical compatibility of the sizing with PU and increased chemical interactions of the sizing with the PU-UPE resin. Mechanical and microscopic analyses also point in favor of improved interphasial behavior with the PU-UPE resin.

Notizen: A study on anisotropic material flow of polymeric composites in compression molding was conducted. Flow resistance and material anisotropy were measured by compression and tension tests to quantify the inhomogeneity of chopped fiber reinforced polymeric composites. The material was assumed to obey Hill's anisotropic yield criterion with its associated flow rule. An anisotropic finite element formulation was developed to simulate the material flow under various conditions. This two-dimensional model was applied to plane strain compression in a mold with plate-rib type geometry to substantiate the effect of fiber induced anisotropy. The predictions were compared with experimental results.

Notizen: When a resin in injected into the mold in liquid composite molding, the preplaced fiber mat may deform near the inlet gate because of the high momentum carried by the injected fluid. A fiber free region near the gate followed by the fiber mat deformation may emerge. This phenomenon is most likely to occur when the stacked fiber mats have low permeability and the resin has high viscosity. A set of mold filling experiments were carried out using an instrumented metal mold and a small transparent mold to investigate the fiber mat deformation during mold filling. Experimental results showed that the fiber mat deformation was limited to a small region near the gate and that deformation greatly reduced the molding pressure. A forced fiber mat deformation employing a modified gate design was proposed to facilitate mold filling in liquid composite molding.

Notizen: In this study, systematic investigation of influence of processing variables on the tensile strength and resin-fiber interface of composites prepared by liquid composite molding process was carried out. The variables studied included injection pressure and mold/fiber mat temperature. Fibers were better wetted and bonded at lower injection pressure and higher molding temperature, which resulted in a higher tensile strength of molded composites. Single filament composite tests were also used in conjunction with birefringence studies to characterize interface bonding. Improved interfacial behavior was observed in the case of compatible systems.

Notizen: This work is and anyalysis of the performing process of a thermoformable glass fiber mat. Important processing variables associated with the preforming operations were extracted from stamping experiments. From the study of deformation modes, we may conclude that the defects found in fiber mat preforming are closely related to these deformation modes. Stretching causes finer thinning and re-orientation. Bending results in mat springback and thickness reduction, while in-plane compression induces wrinkles through buckling. Each defect may be reduced by specific adjustments. These adjustments, however, tend to interact with each other, and make the preforming control a challenging task.
