Notes: Tetragonal LaCo13−xSix compounds have been obtained by annealing cubic LaCo13−xSix compounds. The space group for the tetragonal structure is I4/mcm. Atomic ordering occurs in the tetragonal LaCo13−xSix compounds, i.e., Si atoms show a strong preference for occupying a specific crystallographic position. The tetragonal LaCo13−xSix compounds are ferromagnetic with Curie temperatures higher than 900 K. The magnetic moment per Co atom in the tetragonal LaCo13−xSix compounds decreases with Si content, which can be explained by the rigid-band model. The tetragonal LaCo13−xSix compounds are expected to be promising candidates for permanent magnets purpose.

Notes: Different wheat genotypes were treated with gamma-rays, sodium azide (SA) and EMS before tissue culture and immature embryos from M1 plants or plants shortly after exposure to gamma-rays were used to initiate callus culture. Thousands of plants were regenerated and used to investigate the effect of mutagenic treatments on the regenerated plants and somaclonal variation in the M3R2 and M2R2 generations. The results showed that mutagen-induced damage in terms of reduction in plant height, fertility and spike length were not outstanding in the regenerated plants as compared with the untreated control. In the M3R2 generation, only SA treatment had significantly higher frequencies of somaclonal variations than the control. Increases in the variation frequencies were observed when explant embryos were irradiated with 2.5 and 5 gy gamma-rays and the highest frequency appeared when embryos were exposed to 5 gy gamma-rays on the 5th day after anthesis. Increased variation spectra also resulted from mutagenic treatments and most of the variants recovered were unsuitable for plant improvement.

Notes: The purpose of this article is to describe stereochemical restraints on hydrogen bonding within proteins and their associated solvent which can be included in the refinement (PROLSQ) of X-ray or neutron structures of protein crystals. The parameters which define the geometry of hydrogen bonding, i.e. the correlation between distances and angles, are based on the results of an analysis of hydrogen bonding in crystal structures of myoglobin derivatives analyzed by neutron diffraction.

Notes: Summary Plants were regenerated from immature embryo cultures of 35 winter wheat genotypes. A total of 7142 R2 spike lines from 1593 R1 plants were assessed in the field for somaclonal variants of morphological traits in 1985/86, 1986/87 and 1987/88. Selected variants were studied for their possible genetic basis. Populations of R1 plants were highly variable due mainly to the physiological disturbances resulting from the in vitro processes. Overall somaclonal variation frequencies were 14.2% on the R1 plant basis and 5.3% on the R2 spike basis. Spectra of the variants were similar in the different R2 populations with predominant variants being altered negatively in plant height, maturity, awnedness, and spike and plant types. Over 90% of the variants were observed in some spike progenies of individual regenerants, while the others appeared in all spike progenies of the regenerants and in progenies of different regenerants derived from the same explant embryos. Both uniform R2 variant families and spike lines were found in addition to the segregating variants, which constituted the majority. On average, in a variant family and line, 18 and 14% of their component lines and plants varied, respectively. Inheritability was demonstrated for the variations in both segregated and uniform variant families and spike lines. Of 134 variant selections tested, about 70% was classified inhernable. Both recessive and dominant gene mutations at one, two or three loci were evident in some of the variants as suggested by segregation data.

Notes: A procedure is described for forming a flat face on a frozen piece of plant tissue, which may then be observed fully-hydrated or lightly etched, and coated or uncoated with a metal film, in scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The frozen sample was planed with a glass knife at -80°C in cryo-ultramicrotome. The sections were discarded, and the planed block face placed on the cold stage in the microscope column, either for observation uncoated at low kV, or for light etching (-90°C) to reveal the cell outlines. If a higher accelerating voltage was needed, the face was given an evaporative coating of Al in the cryo-preparation chamber and returned to the column. The advantages of the planed face over the usual fracture face are illustrated: imaging at a chosen rather than a chance position; clearer cellular and subcellular detail; preservation of hydrated gels like mucilage and swollen cell walls; the possibility of making serial parallel sections through the same piece of tissue; opportunities for accurate morphometric analyses on the planed face; capacity to produce longitudinal sections; preservation of very delicate structures that are destroyed by fixation and drying. A major advantage of the Al-coated planed face is the increased accuracy of energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) microanalyses on a smooth rather than a rough surface. Tests are included which show that neither the light etching employed, nor successive planing, interferes with the analyses of elements in the frozen face. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: Boron, aluminum, and gallium tristriflate are new effective catalysts for the polymerization of tetrahydrofuran (THF). High-molecular-weight polytetrahydrofuran (PTHF) was obtained in excellent yield in the bulk polymerization of THF at ambient temperature with all three catalysts. The PTHF samples were characterized and some of their thermodynamic and mechanical properties were investigated and discussed.
