    Notes: The aim of this study was to establish adequate conditions for heat-shocking cells of lactobacilli, to sufficiently suppress lactic acid production without damaging the proteolytic enzyme system important for cheese maturation. Three temperatures, 65, 67 and 70°C were tested, for 22 sec. The best combination for maximum retardation of lactic acid production and minimum damage to the proteolytic system was obtained by treating cells at 67°C for 22 sec. Following such treatment, lactic acid production was retarded by 24 hr, while the proteolytic enzyme system remained scarcely unchanged.

    Notes: Abstract The oxidation of four reductants, two of direct interest in electroless plating baths, at gold electrodes in base was investigated using cyclic voltammetry and the results were interpreted in terms of the incipient hydrous oxide model of electrocatalysis. Dimethylamine borane and tert-butylamine borane reacted in a similar manner; the results were interpreted in terms of the oxidation of the hydroxytri-hydroborate anion; potential/pH studies indicate that the important mediator at the interface for this reaction is a cationic, Au(I), species. Pyridine borane reacted in a significantly different manner; the mediating species in this case appeared to be an Au(III) hydrous oxide; further work is required to explain the behaviour of this system. The oxidation of hypophosphite on gold in base was quite sluggish, as was the oxidation of hypophosphorous aicd at low potentials in solutions of low pH; it was assumed here that in this system there is a complication due to phosphorous atoms adsorbing at, and thus deactivating, the gold surface.

    Notes: Abstract X-Prolyl dipeptidyl peptidase, which hydrolysed X-Pro-Y almost specifically, has been purified to homogeneity from crude cell-free extracts ofLactobacillus casei subsp.casei LLG using fast protein liquid chromatography equipped with preparative and analytical anion exchange columns. The enzyme was purified to 274-fold by ammonium sulphate fractionation, and by two successive ion-exchange chromatographies with a recovery of 34%. The purified enzyme appeared as a single band on both native-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) and sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS)-PAGE and had a molecular mass of 79 kDa. The pH and the temperature optima by the purified enzyme were 7.0 and 50°C, respectively. X-PDP was a serine-dependent enzyme, as both diisopropylfluorophosphate and phenylmethylsulphonylfluoride caused complete inhibition of the enzyme activity. The Michaelis constant (K m ) and maximum reaction velocity (V max ) values were 0.2 mm and 43 mm per milligram, respectively.

    Notes: Abstract We compared the ultrasound (US) findings of gallbladder (GB) perforation with computed tomography (CT) in 13 patients with GB perforation confirmed at surgery. The common findings of GB perforation were pericholecystic fluid collection and layering of GB wall on US, pericholecystic fluid collection, streaky omentum or mesentery, and GB wall defect on CT. Pericholecystic fluid collection, layering of GB wall, and cholelithiasis were similarly detected on US or CT. GB wall defect and/or bulging of the GB wall suggested a site of perforation was revealed in five patients (38.5%) on US and nine (69.2%) on CT. CT further disclosed the findings of streaky omentum or mesentery (84.6%). CT was superior to US for diagnosis of GB perforation.

    Notes: Summary Tianeptine is a tricyclic antidepressant which enhances serotonin uptake in certain brain areas. Tianeptine has been reported to improve both working and reference memories in rodents. The effects of tianeptine on the spontaneous activity of medial septal neurons were studied in rats anesthetized with urethane. Systemic administrations (0.2–1 mg/kg i. v.) of tianeptine decreased the spontaneous activity and disorganized or suppressed the rhythmically bursting activity of medial septal neurons, in a dose related manner. Iontophoretic administrations of tianeptine did not modify the spontaneous activity of medial septal neurons. Changes of the bursting activity were inconsistent. However, tianeptine blocked partially or completely the inhibition induced by the serotonin in 68% of the cases. In contrast, other antidepressants (amitriptyline, clomipramine and fluoxetine) potentiated the inhibitory effect of serotonin in 50%–60% of the cases. Our results show that tianeptine, applied by iontophoresis, has an effect on the medial septal neurons which was opposite to that of other antidepressants. On the basis of our findings, it can be tentatively proposed that tianeptine may have a beneficial effect on memory by counteracting the serotonin-induced inhibition of medial septal neurons.

    Notes: A search procedure with a philosophical basis in molecular biology is adapted for solving single and multiobjective structural optimization problems. This procedure, known as a genetic algorithm (GA). utilizes a blending of the principles of natural genetics and natural selection. A lack of dependence on the gradient information makes GAs less susceptible to pitfalls of convergence to a local optimum. To model the multiple objective functions in the problem formulation, a co-operative game theoretic approach is proposed. Examples dealing with single and multiobjective geometrical design of structures with discrete-continuous design variables, and using artificial genetic search are presented. Simulation results indicate that GAs converge to optimum solutions by searching only a small fraction of the solution space. The optimum solutions obtained using GAs compare favourably with optimum solutions obtained using gradient-based search techniques. The results indicate that the efficiency and power of GAs can be effectively utilized to solve a broad spectrum of design optimization problems with discrete and continuous variables with similar efficiency.

    Notes: In calculations of transonic flows it is necessary to limit the domain of computation to a size that is manageable by computers. At the boundary of the computational domain, boundary conditions are required to ensure a unique solution. Since wave solutions exist in the unsteady transonic flow field, incorrect boundary conditions may result in spurious reflections from the computational boundary. This may introduce errors into the solution. To prevent the spurious reflections, absorbing boundary conditions are often used on the computational boundary. In this paper we describe a method to derive absorbing boudary conditions for transonic calculations. We demonstrate both theoretically and numerically that the use of the absorbing boundary conditions will reduce the spurious reflections in the calculation.
