Notizen: Abstract Transient methods, such as those with pulse- or stepwise heating, have often been used to measure thermal diffusivities of various materials including layered materials. The objective of the present study is to derive an analytical solution of the temperature rise in a multilayered material, the front surface of which is subjected to pulse- or stepwise heating. The Laplace transformation has been used to obtain the analytical solution. This solution will enable us to establish the appropriate measurement method for thermophysical properties of the multilayered material. It is also shown that the present solution can be extended to functionally gradient materials (FGM), in which thermophysical properties as well as compositions change continuously.

Notizen: Abstract The temperature response in functionally gradient materials (FGM), subjected to pulseor stepwise heating at the front surface, is evaluated. Applicability of the approximate solution for the temperature response is investigated by comparing it with an exact analytical solution for the FGM in which thermophysical properties have certain profiles. When the FGM is composed of conventional solid materials, appropriateness of the approximate solution for the FGM is demonstrated as far as the temperature response near the rear surface is concerned. The approximate solution is also compared with the solution for the multilayered material. It is shown that an eight-layered material can be regarded as an FGM, as far as the temperature response at the rear surface is concerned, and that the approximate solution can predict the temperature response within 6% error. Because of its simplicity and fair degree of agreement, the approximate solution is anticipated to be used not only for qualitative but also for quantitative prediction of the temperature response near the rear surface of the FGM in engineering applications.

Notizen: Abstract Transient methods, such as those with pulse- or step-wise heating, have often been used to measure thermal diffusivity of various materials including layered composite materials. The aim of the present study is to investigate effects of various parameters on the measurement of thermal diffusivity when the transient methods are applied. Mainly a two-layered material in the pulsewise heating method is considered because of its simplicity and usefulness in identifying and determining the effects of the parameters. First, it has been shown that there exists a special condition for determining the thermal diffusivity of a component in the two-layered material whose other relevant thermophysical properties are known. Second, it has been shown that the thickness of the laserbeam absorption layer, which inevitably makes sample material into the twolayered material, may cause a relatively large error when the thermal diffusivity of the base material is high. Finally, it has been derived a definite relation between the apparent thermal diffusivity obtained from the temperature response and the mean thermal diffusivity, which has a physical meaning related to the thermal resistance.

Notizen: Abstract Temperature response in a functionally gradient material (FGM) which is subjected to stepwise heating is investigated, to estimate the profile of the thermal diffusivity from the temperature response at the rear surface of the FGM. Emphasis is placed on a distribution parameter which gives the profiles of the thermophysical properties when an exact analytical solution exists for the temperature response in the FGM. An explicit expression to determine the distribution parameter is obtained as a function of the thermophysical properties at the rear surface. This explicit expression can represent the dependence of the temperature response on the thermophysical properties within 5% in comparison to the exact solution. It is expected that this identification can provide useful insight into the estimation of thermophysical properties in FGMs. The usefulness of this relation is also examined by comparing given and estimated profiles for the thermal diffusivity. Fair agreement is demonstrated as far as the trend and the approximate magnitude are concerned.

Notizen: Abstract A method is described for the rapid, accurate determination of residual stresses from a holographic interference fringe pattern. The pattern is generated by the displacement field caused by localized relief of residual stresses via the introduction of a small, shallow hole into the surface of a component or test specimen. The theoretical development of the holographic method is summarized. An example is given showing how the method can be applied to a typical experimentally observed fringe pattern to determine principal residual stresses and directions.

Notizen: Abstract Experiments to assess the ability of the holographic/hole-drilling technique to accurately determine uniaxial stresses are described. The experimental data are in the form of optical interference fringe patterns. Different patterns obtained by varying the direction of laser light illuminating a test specimen with respect to the direction of stress are shown. Stresses estimated by the technique are compared with known values in specimens of aluminum alloy 7075-T651 and hardened Type 304L stainless steel.
