    Notes: There is wide agreement that current psycholinguistic techniques (especially discourse analysis) may help us better understand the relationship between psychopathology and linguistic performance. This application would seem particularly worthwhile in the domain of schizophrenic speech, which has resisted adequate characterization in terms of earlier linguistic paradigms. A major effort at systematic psycholinguistic analysis has been made and is most developed in Rochester and Martin's (1979) monograph, Crazy Talk. While we see their interest in utilizing discourse analysis to be very appropriate, it manifests some serious shortcomings. Accordingly, we attempt to give a clearer picture of discourse analysis and the assumptions behind it. This elucidation should provide a better indication of both the promise and the procedures of a discourse-analytic approach to the speech productions of psychiatric populations.

    Notes: The distribution of fracture intensities occurring during compression of puffed corn meal extrudates was described using an exponential function, and parameters from that analysis were used as fracturability indices. Since “jagged” or oscillating stress-strain functions are typical for porous and brittle materials, fracture intensities were determined by measuring the abrupt, sequential reductions in stress produced during compression. Both distribution exponent and cumulative fracture stress correlated strongly with fracturability measured by other techniques, including fractal and Fourier analysis of stress-strain functions. Distribution parameters also indicated textural differences due to process parameters (structural modification through addition of different levels of sucrose) and storage conditions (equilibration at various relative humidities).

    Notes: Abstract Tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) from a wide range of human and murine tumors can be expanded in vitro using interleukin-2 (IL-2). These TIL are cytolytic T lymphocytes with in vivo and in vitro antitumor activity in mice and in humans. TIL from human melanoma can recognize autologous tumor in an MHC-restricted fashion, localize in vivo after111In labeling, and mediate regression of large metastatic deposits. Although studied extensively in vitro, less is known in vivo about TIL activity associated with tumor regression. This study was undertaken, in association with a study of TIL localization, to investigate mechanisms of TIL action by evaluating histopathological changes that occur at the tumor site during TIL administration. A total of 106 pre- and post-treatment pathological specimens from 25 patients enrolled in phase II TIL treatment and111In-TIL imaging protocols were examined blindly by a single pathologist. Histological subtype, lymphocytic infiltration, melanin content, vascularity, and necrosis were documented for each tumor specimen. Average baseline and post-treatment parameters were compared. Any significant changes were evaluated for correlation with clinical response and111In-TIL localization to tumor. Melanin content and vascularity of the tumor did not change as a result of therapy or correlate with either response or TIL localization. However, both increased lymphocytic infiltration and tumor necrosis were present after TIL administration (P=0.044 and 0.032 respectively). Furthermore, increases in lymphocytic infiltration correlated with tumor imaging using111In-TIL, and with the percentage of111In-labeled injectate present per gram of tumor specimen (P=0.036 and 0.0041 respectively). This suggests that TIL either account for the increased lymphocytes directly, or localize to tumor and recruit endogenous lymphocytes. We were unable to demonstrate any pretreatment histopathological predictors of response or variables that significantly correlated with subsequent clinical response, although peak and average values of necrosis were higher in responding patients compared to non-responding patients.

    Notes: Summary The purpose of this study was to replicate and extend, in a Turkish sample, previous investigations of speech content in English-speaking schizophrenics. Computer content analytic procedures, which quantify thematic emphases in the subjects' free speech, have been shown to differentiate schizophrenic patients from other acutely ill psychiatric patients and from normal controls. We repeated the speech sampling procedure with hospitalized psychiatric patients in Turkey, and analyzed their responses using content analysis procedures with a translation of the dictionary or language classification system used in the original studies of English-speaking patients in the United States. Eighty subjects were included in the study: 20 schizophrenics, 20 depressives, 20 manics and 20 healthy controls. There were ten females and ten males in each group. After being diagnosed separately by two clinicians using the Turkish version of the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R (SCID), each subject's free speech was tape-recorded in a standardized session. The speech content of Turkish patients with schizophrenia exhibited considerable similarity to that previously observed in American subjects, but there were certain dissimilarities that appeared to reflect the impact of culture on the manifestations of the schizophrenic disorder. The phenomenological differences between the three psychiatric syndromes compared were also reflected in the results of the content analysis. The most dissimilar syndromes were mania and depression whereas the most similar were mania and schizophrenia. The particular word categories emphasized by specific groups also appeared to be consistent with the effects of their psychiatric disorders. For example, schizophrenic patients betrayed concerns with their own thought processes and de-emphasized references to realistic or adaptive issues, while “Distress” and “Avoid” were two of the more frequently used word categories by the depressive group.
