Notes: We report on the first static and dynamic light scattering measurements of near-critical behavior of an ionic fluid. The model system tetra-n-butylammonium picrate-tridecanol exhibits a liquid–liquid phase transition with an upper critical point near 342 K. The correlation lengths and scattering intensities scale with temperature corresponding to mean-field behavior. The data are also concordant with nonclassical 3D-Ising exponents if suitable Wegner corrections are applied. The spherical model recently suggested to apply for ionic fluids can be ruled out, thus resolving a current controversy in the literature.

Notes: Results are presented of a numerical investigation of the strongly nonlinear bifurcation properties of an isothermal current sheet model which has previously been investigated in the weakly nonlinear regime by analytical methods. With the method used, the linear stability of the bifurcating branch is also checked. The results have applications in the stability of plasma systems with current sheets, e.g., the Earth's magnetotail or solar coronal arcades.

Notes: One of the recent applications of ion sources is their use for ion beam assisted deposition of thin films and coatings. This method combines a coating technique such as evaporation or sputtering with bombardment with ions in the keV energy range. The required ions with defined energy, flux, and impact angle are delivered from an ion source. An apparatus for ion beam assisted evaporation with a duoplasmatron ion source is described. The features of the duoplasmatron with respect to application for ion beam assisted deposition such as beam shape, uniformity and intensity, ion-to-neutral ratio, and focused and defocused mode are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Phase diagrams and light-scattering measurements of solutions of trimethylethyl-ammonium bromide in chloroform (ε=4.72 at 25 C) with an ethanol content of 1% are reported. The system has a lower critical point nearT = 25°C. The critical mole fraction is xc,=0.0503 ± 0.0002, which corresponds to the reduced variablesT c * =0.036 andc c * =0.029 of therestricted primitive model (RPM) and is slightly below the values predicted by the RPM for the critical parameters. The analysis of the scattering intensity at critical composition gives v = 0.631 ± 0.003 for the critical exponent of the correlation length Σ with an amplitude of 0.87± 0.01 nm. The system, a solution of a salt of essentially spherical ions of almost equal size in a simple low-dielectric polar liquid, with critical parameters very close to predictions of the RPM, nevertheless has an Ising critical point.

Notes: Abstract In a strong laser field (I=2 GW/cm2) TlI is dissociated by a two-photon process and the Tl fragment is detected state specifically. The yield of Tl 6p 2 P 3/2 (Tl*) is measured as a function of the dissociation wavelength (480 nm–540 nm). If the dissociation wavelength is close to two-photon transitions of the Tl atom from 6p 2 P 3/2 to np2 P 1/2,3/2 or mf2 F 5/2,7/2,n=10 ... 15,m=7 ... 12 dips in the yield are observed. These dips show a significant asymmetric broadening, compared to a free atomic transition and the observation is interpreted as an absorption process of the transient state of dissociating TlI during the laser pulse. By applying the Landau-Zener approximation for the potential crossing of dressed molecular states, we are able to describe the broadening and the power density dependence of the observations. Simulations show that the asymmetry is determined by the difference potential of the electronic states which are coupled by the laser field.
