Notes: Abstract A series of copper(II) complexes with sugar type ligands (polyalcohols, sugar acids, di- and trisaccharides) was prepared. The compositions of the complexes were determined by standard analytical methods. The results showed that carboxylato and deprotonated alcoholic hydroxy groups participate in the complex formation. The EPR spectra and magnetic susceptibility data reflected the formation of species containing isolated copper(II) centers indicating that in those molecules which contain two copper ions, these are separated by sugar ligands.

Notes: Abstract Silicon was etched in an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide under ir laser irradiation. Two types of lasers were used, a Nd:YAG laser with a wavelength of λ=1.06 μm and a CO2 laser with λ=10.6 μm. Small-size blind holes, through holes and reliefs were formed on a Si target, and even a special type of hole can be formed with help of a CO2 laser, namely a blind hole with a hillock in its center.

Notes: Summary GABA-metabolism in the rat hippocampal formation has been studied by means of classical chromogenic histochemistry (localisation of the GABA-transaminase→succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase system) and by means of light- and electron microscopic autoradiographic localization of the enzyme-inhibitor 14C-thiosemicarbazide. Both the histochemical and the autoradiographic approaches proved a gliocellular localization of GABA metabolism, concentrated at glio-neuronal interfaces. Contradictory data of relevant biochemical literature can readily be explained on the basis of these results, offering new perspectives for neurophysiological interpretation and pharmacotherapeutical treatment of behavioral limbic disorders.

Notes: Summary The effect of unilateral adrenalectomy on the incorporation of tritiated leucine into the ventromedial nucleus of both sides of the rat hypothalamus was studied by light- and electron-microscopical autoradiography. The left adrenal had been removed and 14 days later labeled amino acid was given intravenously. Rats were killed 5, 30, 60 and 120 min after isotope administration. Following unilateral adrenalectomy there is a marked difference in the autoradiographic reaction of both sides of the hypothalamic ventromedial nucleus. On the right side the number of autoradiographic silver grains is much higher than on the left side, the difference being statistically significant for each animal and for each time interval. In accordance with previous findings the data suggest the existence of a neural pathway from the adrenal gland to the hypothalamus.

Notes: Summary Paramylon is the β-1,3 glucan storage carbohydrate in the euglenoid algae. Mature paramylon granules are highly crystalline, fibrillar, and have a complex substructure. X-ray diffraction was used to demonstrate that mature paramylon granules are much more crystalline than immature granules. Freeze-etch electron microscopy showed that in mature granules, the microfibrils are organized in highly ordered arrays while the microfibrils of immature granules are less organized. The data suggest that the high crystallinity of paramylon is due to higher-order aggregates of microfibrils and the interaction of water with the microfibrils. The dissolution of paramylon was recorded by darkfield videomicroscopy. In a 0.5 N NaOH solution, paramylon dissociates in a regular manner into its constituent 4 nm microfibrils, and the central region of the granule is the last remaining refractile area during the dissolution process.

Notes: Abstract Displacement of particles from the purified light-harvesting chlorophyll a/b protein aggregate (LHC) was studied in magnetic fields of various strengths (0 to 1.6 T) by polarized fluorescence measurements. Macromolecular aggregates of LHC have a considerable magnetic susceptibility which enables the particles to rotate and align with their nematic axes parallel with H. As LHC is embedded in a transmembrane direction thylakoids should align perpendicular to H, the mode of alignment experimentally observed in thylakoids. The value of the magnetic susceptibility could be estimated by relating it to the integral susceptibility of the chlorophyll molecules in LHC. The fitting of this value with the field strength dependency of the fluorescence polarization ratio (FP) revealed a relationship between the LHC content of various photosynthetic membranes and their capacity for alignment, which suggested that LHC might be the torque ordering chloroplasts in a magnetic field.

Notes: Abstract Bean leaves grown under periodic illumination (56 cycles of 2 min light and 98 min darkness) were subsequently exposed to continuous illumination, and in connection with granum formation and accumulation of the light-harvesting pigment-protein complex thermoluminescence and light-induced shrinkage of thylakoid membranes were studied. Juvenile chloroplasts with large double sheets of thylakoids obtained under periodic light exhibited low temperature spectra of polarized fluorescence yielding fluorescence polarization (FP) values 〈 1 at 695 nm, characteristic for pheophytin emission. In the course of maturation under continuous light when normal grana appeared and the chlorophyll a/b light-harvesting photosystem II complex was incorporated into the membrane, at 695 nm the relative intensity of fluorescence dropped and FP changed to a value of 〉 1, suggesting an overlap between the emission of pheophytin and that of the chlorophyll a/b light-harvesting photosystem II complex. Thermoluminescence glow curves recorded with juvenile thylakoids displayed a relatively high proportion of emission at low temperatures (around -10°C) while with mature chloroplasts, more thermoluminescence originated from energetically deeper traps (discharged around 28°C). This means that during thylakoid development the capacity of the membrane to stabilize the separated charges increases, which might be favourable for the ultimate conservation of energy. The more extensive energization of mature thylakoids was also indicated by a light-induced decrease in the thickness of the membranes upon illumination; a change which could not be detected in juvenile thylakoids.
