    Notes: Summary A new assay for IgGRF activity is described which employs human IgGFc as the antigen and a radiolabelled monoclonal antibody directed against human IgG (CHI domain) as the developing antibody. Using this assay IgGRF activity against human IgG isotypes was measured and most sera from RA patients were shown to react predominantly with IgG1 and IgG2 but few reacted with IgG3 and IgG4. The same sera were tested for IgMRF to the IgG isotypes. IgG2 was the best antigen, IgG1 and IgG4 were less so and reactivity with IgG3 was the lowest. IgGRF without associated IgMRF was obtained, its specificity compared to that of IgMRF, and found to be broadly similar. With the new assay high levels of serum IgGRF were found in those RA patients with extraarticular disease but not in RA patients with synovitis alone.

    Notes: Summary The taxonomy of edible Colocasia (Cocoyam) is confusing. The existence of one species, C. esculenta var. antiquorum or C. esculenta and C. antiquorum as two separate species is controversial. Nine high yielding Nigerian cultivars of cocoyam made up of members of the two taxa were grown under the same environmental conditions. As a preliminary investigation, 17 characters were monitored and recorded to help in the classification of the cultivars. Results showed that cocoyams can be grouped into two separate species. The qualities possessed by TCe 23, Nwine and Ukpon cultivars which include pink tuber skin, long or club shaped cormels and non-irritation in the throat when boiled and eaten, clearly distinguished them from those of Tce 15, 19, 27, 36, Ede-ofe and Kochuom.

    Notes: Summary Two numerical taxonomic techniques, single linkage cluster analysis (SLCA) and principal components analysis (PCA) were used to study the relationship between Dioscorea cayenensis and D. rotundata cultivars. The study was prompted by the confusion in the taxonomy of the two taxa. Twenty-two cultivars (14 of D. rotundata and 8 of D. cayenensis) were collected and planted under the same environmental conditions for 3 successive years. Altogether, 76 characters, which include morphological, anatomical and ecological characters were observed and coded for analyses. Results from both methods agreed and showed that two groups of taxa exist. The discrimination between groups and description of differences between groups were more strongly marked from the PCA than in the SLCA.
