Notes: Summary. A further series of 100 consecutive gauze hammock sling operations for urinary stress incontinence is presented with preliminary urodynamic assessment in all cases and follow-up from 6 months to 5 years. In 63 women the operation was a primary procedure. Modification to the operation included redesign of the shape of the sling, use of increased tension where minor degrees of bladder detrusor instability exist, and use of a suprapubic catheter postoperatively. Of the 100 women 87 were reviewed directly and 12 indirectly; only one was lost to follow-up. After operation, 78% were continent, 17% showed improvement and there were 4% failures. The only serious complication was a pulmonary embolus in one woman but 15 had some voiding difficulty during the follow-up period which responded to urethral dilatation in all but three. There were no fistulas. This improved technique should overcome many of the objections to the sling procedure and is a suitable primary procedure for stress incontinence or for treatment of recurrence after previous alternative procedures.

Notes: A unique motor control and data-acquisition system has been developed to automate experiments. The system is capable of controlling 16 stepping motors while collecting, analyzing, and graphically displaying data. The system has been applied to automatically finding x-ray rocking curves and Bragg angles in x-ray topography. The Stony Brook motor control system has been successfully applied to the automated control of double crystal and Berg–Barrett cameras.

Notes: Light absorption by a solid material and conversion of part, or all, of the optical energy into heat due to nonradiative deexcitation processes within the solid can give rise to an electrical signal in a pyroelectric thin film in contact with the sample. This effect forms the basis of a new spectroscopic technique for the study of condensed phase matter. A one-dimensional theory is presented, which describes the dependence of the pyroelectric signal on the optical, thermal, and geometric parameters of the solid/pyroelectric system. Specifically, the theory examines the conditions under which the photopyroelectric signal exhibits a linear dependence on the optical absorption coefficient of the solid. Thus a theoretical basis for the technique of photopyroelectric spectroscopy is established. Qualitative comparisons between predictions of the theory and preliminary experimental observations are used to test the applicability of the theory to experimental configurations of practical interest.

Notes: : A randomized double-blind parallel trial comparing acitretin and etretinate was performed in 20 patients with severe psoriasis during treatment period of 12 weeks. The initial dose was 30 mg/day for 4 weeks, and the mean dose at the end of the study was slightly tower in the acitretin group when compared to the etretinate group (30.7 mg/day and 33,4 mg/day, respectively). Follow-up examinations were carried out every 2 weeks, and the efficacy of treatment was evaluated by using the PASI score. Percentage improvement in the PASI score was 50% at week 10 in both groups, and the difference between them at week 12 was insignificant. Both quantitatively and qualitatively, acitretin and etretinate do not significantly differ.

Notes: : The impacts of alternative forest watershed management practices are examined from a multicriterion viewpoint in order to select the most satisfactory management scheme. The selection process is carried out using two types of multicriterion decision making techniques: the outranking types of ELECTRE I and II, and the distance-based type of compromise programming (CP). The process is illustrated using the U.S. Forest Service Beaver Creek Experimental Watershed in the Salt-Verde River Basin of Arizona as an example. The desired objectives of the experimental study and the alternative forest watershed resources management schemes are transformed into an evaluation matrix of alternatives versus criteria array. Analyses of the matrix using the aforementioned techniques result in a complete preference ordering of the feasible alternatives in the cases of ELECTRE LI and CP and a partial ordering when ELECTRE I is used. In addition, some sensitivity analyses have been performed and showed ELECTRE II and CP to be fairly robust with respect to parameter changes, while ELECTRE I being highly sensitive to changes in threshold levels. Overall the three techniques pointed out that 65 percent vegetation cut is the best management scheme, while the next best is shown to be 50 percent vegetation cut.

Notes: : A typical single family residence in Tucson, Arizona, was retrofitted to incorporate low-water-use fixtures and water reuse systems. The use of municipal water was reduced by 53 percent to 53 gallons per capita per day (gpcd) and total water use at the home was reduced by 33 percent to 74 gpcd.

Notes: : Resource utilization as practiced by humans is identified as the main cause of the degradation of rangeland watersheds, a process referred to as desertification. This paper introduces a multi-objective decision making methodology for the selection of a plan which if implemented should limit the desertification process. The evaluation objectives are measured by quantitative and qualitative criteria. The quantitative criteria provide the performance level for production and sediment yield, while the qualitative criteria give such information as public acceptance of a particular alternative or worth of an appropriate wildlife habitat. A system model is applied to describe the dynamics of a range site in response to climatic and human inputs. As such it provides the information required by the quantitative criteria as well as a range condition index that identifies the productivity of a given range site. A multiobjective selection procedure is presented that will lead to the appropriate technique from an available set, in this case ESAP, Environmental Sensitivity Analysis Package. Four individuals with diverse backgrounds in natural resource management participated as decision makers and decided on their preferred alternatives. Finally, ranked alternatives in agreement with all of the decision makers were obtained.
