Description / Table of Contents: Abstract
Notes: Abstract Visible absorption spectrum for the cation-radical of pyridine N-oxide pyO+ obtained in the oxidation of the appropriate N-oxide by the photo-excited triplet state of chloranil, has a wide maximum at λ=430–460 nm. pyO+ reacts with cyclohexane, methanol or toluene with the formation of intermediate complexes. Equilibrium constants of their formation K×10−2 dm3/mol amount to 0.1, 1.0 and 2.0, respectively. The (pyO+...RH) complex readily reacts with O2, and in the absence of O2 its decomposition is independent of the hydrocarbon nature.

Notes: Conclusions The rate constants were measured for the annihilation of the triplet exciplexes of quinones with 4-phenylaniline in various solvents and the prototropic equilibrium constants in the primary exciplex were also determined. Hydrogen bonding between the radicals in the exciplex leads to an acceleration of radiationless deactivation of the exciplex to the ground state and retardation of the dissociation of the exciplexes into radical-ions. The solvation of the exciplexes of an alcohol is accompanied by a decrease in the rate of deactivation of the exciplexes to the ground state.

Notes: Conclusions Laser photolysis was used to determine the kinetics of the geminal and bulk recombination of radical pairs formed in the transfer of a hydrogen atom from p-cresol to triplet benzophenone in liquid polymers. In a very viscous polymer matrix containing a nonviscous plasticizer, the bulk recombination of the low-molecular-weight radicals proceeds at a very high rate as in nonviscous liquids.

Notes: Conclusions 1. Laser photolysis was used to determine the spectral kinetic characteristics of the triplet states, semiquinones and radical-anions of 3,5-di-tert-butyl-1,2-benzoquinone and 3,6-di-tert-butyl-1,2-benzoquinone in liquid solutions. The quantum yields for the formation of the triplet states are close to 100%. 2. The triplet states of 3,5-di-tert-butyl-1,2-benzoquinone and 3,6-di-tert-butyl-1,2-benzoquinone are quenched by the corresponding hydroquinones with high rate constants and the formation of semiquinone radicals. Semiquinone radicals are formed in the case of N,N′-diethylaniline in nonpolar media while radical-ions are formed in polar media.

Notes: Conclusions 1. The quenching of the triplet states of substituted p-benzoquinones by anthracene and its derivatives proceeds by energy transfer if the energy of the state with complete charge transfer is higher than the triplet energy of the quencher. If the energy of the state with complete charge transfer is less than the energy of the triplet state of the quencher, then quenching leads to the formation of triplet exciplexes. The state with complete charge transfer makes the major contribution to the structure of these exciplexes. 2. The spin-orbital interaction is one of the determining factors in the kinetics of the radiationless transitions of the triplet exciplexes to the ground state as indicated by the heavy atom effect.

Notes: Conclusions 1. A model of geminal recombination of radical pairs generated in the triplet state in micelles including triplet-singlet transitions in radical pairs, caused by isotropic and anisotropic hyperfine interactions with strong separation of radicals and spin-orbital interaction for contact radical pairs, was proposed. 2. The spin-orbital interaction determines the rate of recombination of triplet radical pairs in micelles of small radius in strong magnetic fields. The contribution of the spinorbital interaction increases on incorporation of heavy atoms in the radicals.

Notes: Conclusions 1. The complexing constants of eosin (ZD=−2) and zinc porphyrins (ZD=+4, −4) with charged viologens (ZA=0 to +4) with different ionic strengths were determined. 2. It was shown that ΔG of complexing can be considered the additive sum of the ΔG of a donor-acceptor π interaction which is constant in the dye-viologens series and the ΔG of the electrostatic interaction which changes as a function of the charges of the reactants.

Notes: Conclusions Laser photolysis was used for the direct detection of the spectral and kinetic characteristics of the contact radical-ion pair triplet exciplexes generated upon the interaction of triplet benzophenone with tertiary aromatic amines in nonpolar solvents. The exciplexes disappear as a result of reverse electron transfer and proton transfer.

Notes: Conclusions 1. The rates of triplet quenching of anthraquinone by substituted anilines and phenols and their OH- and NH2-deuterated analogs have been measured by pulse photolysis in toluene and acetonitrile solutions. 2. In the case of anilines the kinetics of hydrogen atom transfer are determined by charge transfer in the transition state or by the formation of charge transfer complexes as intermediates in these reactions. The kinetic isotope effect for these reactions is increased up to five as the anthraquinone triplet quenching rate constants are decreased as a function of reduced electron-donating ability of substituted anilines. 3. The kinetic isotope effect for hydrogen atom transfer reactions from substituted phenols to the triplet state of anthraquinone reaches a maximum of two and is determined not only by the degree of charge transfer in the transition state but also by the kinetics of formation of an intermediate hydrogen-bonded complex.
