Notes: Summary The presence of metallothionein (MT) was demonstrated in placentae from cadmium-exposed and control rats by an immunohistochemical technique, using peroxidase as label and the diaminobenzidine procedure for the staining reaction. The protein was found in different regions of the placenta, i.e. in trophoblastic labyrinth, in spongiotrophoblast and in visceral yolk sac. Cytophotometric analysis of the final reaction product revealed that the amount of MT was increased in the placental labyrinth of cadmium-exposed rats. Increases were found in both nuclei and cytoplasm of trophoblast cells in the labyrinth region. Possible roles of MT in the transport of zinc and in the carbohydrate metabolism are discussed.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents a double layer potential approach of elastodynamic BIE crack analysis. Our method regularizes the conventional strongly singular expressions for the traction of double layer potential into forms including integrable kernels and 0th, 1st and 2nd order derivatives of the double layer density. The manipulation is systematized by the use of the stress function representation of the differentiated double layer kernel functions. This regularization, together with the use of B-spline functions, is shown to provide accurate numerical methods of crack analysis in 3D time harmonic elastodynamics.

Notes: Abstract Stresses and strains near a rapidly propagating crack tip are affected by the mass density of the material. This paper starts with a brief summary of analytical results for near-tip dynamic fields as predicted by linear elastic fracture mechanics. Next, exact expressions are derived for dynamic crack-line strains, for mode-III crack propagation in a nonlinear elastic material and in an elastic perfectly-plastic material. These expressions are valid on the crack line from the moving crack tip to the moving boundary with the region of linearly elastic deformation. For steady-state crack growth, a critical strain criterion is used to compute the relation between external load and crack tip speed. The required external load increases with crack-tip speed.
