Summary The necessary apparent energy for starting the shrink, which coincides with the β-relaxation, is decreased by the interaction between organic solvent molecules and polymer chains. The extent to which a certain solvent decreases with activation energy can be correlated in a satisfactory manner with the solubility parameter of the solvents. The correlation of the decreased apparent energies of activation with the specific solubility parameter of the solvents used in these investigations yields the solubility parameter of the PET-fibre: total solubility parameter:δ T , PET = 9,9 (cal/ccm)1/2 hydrogen solubility parameter:δ h , PET = 5,5 (cal/ccm)1/2 polar solubility parameter:δ p , PET = 3 (Cal/ccm)1/2 non-polar solubility parameter:δ np , PET = 7,7 (cal/ccm)1/2. The activation energy of the short range diffusion of the chain segments in the amorphous regions in a swollen PET-fibre has been evaluated to 17 (kcal/mol). The comparison of the measured swelling-effectiveness with the characteristics of a good plastifier for bulk polymers as they are postulated by Kanig shows that the latter can be used too in the case of fibre swelling agents. A good swelling agent needs therefore a polymerphobic group in order to possess a high relative swelling effectiveness, and a polymerphilic group in order to increase the absolutly swelling effectiveness by the means of a high rate of absorption. The gravimetric swelling measurements and the metric and volumetric measured volumen contractions result — correlated with their solubility parameters — in curves whose typical Caussian characteristics are conform to the solubility parameter concept.
Notes:
