Notes: Using a generalized Fermi hypernetted chain method on a Jastrow trial ground-state wave function, which includes a dependence on the z component of the nuclear spin, it is shown that spin correlations make a significant contribution to the ground-state energy of liquid 3He, accounting for much of the energy necessary to stabilize unpolarized liquid 3He relative to completely polarized 3He.

Notes: Euler-Lagrange calculations of the ground state properties of liquid 4He at several densities and for six different two-body potentials are compared to one another and to experiment. The trial ground state wave functions used are the Jastrow function and the triplet Feenberg function. Four recent potentials produce very good agreement with recent neutron and X-ray liquid structure function measurements. The experimental energy per particle lies about 0.3 K below two of the theoretical curves and 0.3 K above a third, all obtained using the triplet Feenberg function, though no fundamental three-body potentials are included.

Notes: Summary A small percentage of a stock foot-and-mouth disease virus population was found to be relatively resistant to adsorption with homogenized adult mouse kidney. To select this portion of the population, a series of 10 passages was performed, each passage consisting of adsorption with homogenized kidney and propagation of the unadsorbed virus in bovine kidney cell cultures. The selected virus was relatively resistant to adsorption with mouse kidney and relatively avirulent for adult mice. It was immunogenic in adult mice and seemed to be antigenically the same as the parent virus. This information might possibly be used in selecting viruses for live virus vaccines.

Notes: Corrosion resistance is particularly important in medical treatments requiring implantation of metallic objects in the human body. Unfortunately, weight loss measurements and other conventional corrosion testing techniques are insufficiently sensitive and difficult to adapt to in vivo environments. The linear polarization technique can be used to remotely meaure the corrosion rates of metals implanted in tissue using needle probes. The principles of this technique are reviewed and the results of tests performed on steel, cobalt, and molybdenum implanted in experimental animals are discussed.
