Notes: [Auszug] Conventional zone plates work by blocking out alternate zones. Constructive interference of the waves diffracted from the remaining zones occurs at specific points which are in an image relationship to their original source. Lord Rayleigh7 pointed out that phase reversing, rather than absorbing ...

Notes: Abstract Intrapericardial teratoma in the newborn is a rare potentially fatal neoplasm. Pre-operative diagnosis depends upon recognition of specific radiographic and echocardiographic findings in a newborn with a large cardiothymic image and pericardial effusion. Surgical intervention is usually curative whereas undiagnosed intrapericardial teratoma is often fatal.

Notes: Summary In one patient treated by peritoneal dialysis for psoriasis the skin lesions cleared completely. In two persons hemodialysis gave unsatisfactory results. In treated and another three untreated patients cellular immunity was evidently suppressed. This phenomenon is similar to the immunologic changes in persons with uremia. Solutes in middle molecular weight range (SMMWR) suppress cellular immunity. These compounds were therefore investigated in psoriatics. The level of SMMWR was lower before than after each dialysis, although their concentration increased slightly during the dialytic treatment. This suggests that solutes in middle molecular weight are fixed in the epidermis and/or in the walls of the skin capillaries and that dialysis liberates them from these places. Peritoneal dialysis seems to be a more effective method of treating psoriasis than hemodialysis. Solutes in middle molecular weight range might play an important role in the pathomechanisms of this multifactorial disease.

Notes: Summary The effect of age on hepatocyte mensuration and mitotic activity 48 h after partial hepatectomy was investigated in rats. Both age and partial hepatectomy had significant effects upon hepatocyte counts per microscopic field. The number of hepatocytes per microscopic field declined with age in the control groups of different advancing ages and in the experimental groups of advancing ages. There was essentially no mitotic activity in the livers of the control groups. However, mitotic counts were greatly increased in livers from those animals that were partially hepatectomized; the increase in mitotic activity in the 13-month-old animals was double over that observed in both the very young and the very old.

Notes: Summary An analytical method is described which has suitable sensitivity and specificity for analyzing urine samples from workers who are exposed to chlorinated phenols. The phenolic compounds are separated by steam distillation and then extracted into isopropyl ether. Without derivatizing the material, it is analyzed by gas chromatography on a 180 cm x 2 mm i.d. glass column containing 60/80 mesh Tenax GC (ENKA NV, The Netherlands) using flame ionization detectors. The detection limits in urine range from 0.1 mg/l urine for phenol to 1 mg/l for the di- and trichlorophenols. The coefficient of variation for each component is less than 4%. The naturally occurring metabolites cresol and 4-heptanone are also isolated and can be quantified by this method.

Notes: Zusammenfassung 1.
