Notes: : Of 26 patients infested with Stronglyoides stercoralis 10 (38.5%) were asymptomatic without systemic or cutaneous signs. Nine patients (34.6%) presented with systemic complaints only and seven patients (26.9%) had systemic and cutaneous manifestations. Further observations of the skin lesions on four of those with systemic and cutaneous manifestations revealed linear urticarial bands, extending to several centimeters within 1 hour and persisting up to many days, waiting and waning. Blood examination showed eosinophilia in all patients. These findings confirm the concept that larva currens even alone should be considered a cutaneous sign of systemic disease.

Notes: Kuwait, situated in the north-west corner of the Arabian Gulf, has an arid climate with very hot dry summers and mild winters. Sandstorms are a regular climatic feature. occurring most frequently in summer. Before the mid-1950s allergy was not considered to be a problem. Since then it has become a major cause of morbidity; 18% of the population are reported to suffer from its manifestations. Over the past 3 years 1000 asthmatic patients attending a central clinic have been carefully studied. The present paper analyses various aspects of the asthmatic condition in this desert country.

Notes: Alternate methods of parboiling of paddy, in place of conventional steam-parboiling, for obtaining improved hydration ability in the parboiled rice were explored. Ratnachudi variety, a medium-grained, tall indica, high-amylose rice, was used. The paddy was soaked in warm water to a saturation moisture level (ca 30%, w.b.). The soaked paddy was dried by either exposing it to very hot air (150°—200°C) or by roasting it in hot sand (250°—300°C) for a few minutes. It was observed that under appropriate high-temperature conditions paddy got simultaneously dried and parboiled by both the above treatments. Parboiled rice so produced was examined for appearance (translucence, color), milling breakage, alkali degradation pattern and starch retrogradation. It was found to be quite comparable to normal steam-parboiled rice in all respects, except that it showed the desirable property of improved hydration ability due to lowering of starch retrogradation. Possible development of the technique into commercial process is indicated.

Notes: Parboiled brown rice contained considerably more reducing sugars (RS) but less sucrose and free amino acids (FAA) than raw brown rice. On milling, there was considerably loss of sucrose and FAA from raw rice, but very little from parboiled rice; reducing sugars changed little in either. Processing conditions affected the contents of sugars and FAA. Maximum increase in RS and decrease in sucrose content occurred after soaking at 60°C. Controlled incubation of rice flour, intact grain, separated germ and degermed rice in water showed that considerable changes in sugars and FAA occurred in all cases, the magnitude depending on the circumstances, but a greater part of the sugars leached out into the water during soaking.

Notes: Abstract Dichlorvos (O,O-dimethyl-2:2-dichlorovinyl phosphate) was administered IP (3 mg/kg) daily for 10 days to a group of albino rats. Open field behavior was significantly depressed below the mean of the control group. On day 7, ambulation was reduced to 24% of the mean but recovered to 60% on day 10. Similarly, rearing response was decreased on day 7 and showed a fast recovery on day 10 but the preening response further declined on day 10. Defecation, on the contrary, was suppressed to 0% on day 7 and showed complete recovery on day 10. Motor activity showed a significant depression and fine movements were reduced more than gross movements in the second phase. Dopamine was significantly decreased on days 5 and 7 but showed a 13% recovery in the brain stem on day 10. Norepinephrine was significantly reduced in the cerebral hemisphere while serotonin was decreased both in cerebral hemisphere and brain stem. Neither of these two amines showed significant recovery on day 10. Interesting concordance of the open field behavioral changes with the levels of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin in the various regions of the rat brain was noticeable and has been discussed.

Notes: Abstract A recently formulated procedure for the quantization of relativistic systems on phase space (defined initially as a coset space of the Poincaré group) is described. The wave functions of the elementary systems lead to proper probability distributions, for the stochastic localization of the corresponding particles in phase space, and possess conserved currents. The non-relativistic limit is considered briefly, and finally, the procedure is applied to obtain a 2-component covariant equation of motion for a spin — 1/2 charged particle in an external electromagnetic field. The stability of the system, against zitterbewegung effects, is discussed.

Notes: Summary A two-stage fixation technique has been developed to obtain morphological preservation and retention of glucose 6-phosphatase (G6-Pase) activity for its demonstration in rat cerebral cortex. The technique was then employed to localize the enzyme in the cortex where it produced a dense reaction over the well developed granular endoplasmic reticulum cisternae in nerve cells and oligodendrocytes which contrasted with a thin reaction in astrocytes. Other membranous organelles showed no reaction.
