Notes: Summary The formation of volatile arsenic species during electrothermal AAS analysis of arsenic can be suppressed by the addition of Ni2+. A lot of oxidizing agents, including nitric acid, have a substantial enhancing effect on the signals of arsenic. The analytical concentrations of Ni2+ and HNO3 to be used were optimized through a Simplex technique. An optimum concentration of 2000 ppm of Ni2 + as Ni(NO3)2 in 2% HNO3 was deduced. However, the direct analysis of arsenic in urine is still impossible, even with the addition of Ni2+. Reproducible results are only obtained after a sixfold dilution of the urine sample, resulting in a mean limit of detection of about 50 ppb.

Notes: Abstract The use of computers has made data collection much easier and analytical chemists increasingly wonder how to make use of all the data obtained. Pattern recognition permits to extract information present in large data sets in an automatic way. Many scientists acknowledge this fact but are rebutted by the task of learning to use pattern recognition methods. Indeed, there are many methods available and for the newcomer it is extremely difficult to make a selection. For this reason, the lecture will start by explaining the models used in pattern recognition. This will be followed by a critical discussion of advantages and disadvantages of the methods and a selection of preferred methods.

Notes: Abstract This poster illustrates the lecture on Pattern Recognition and gives recently published and unpublished examples, mainly from the laboratory from the first author. The applications concern: - the determination of metabolic pathways of branched chain fatty acids (by clustering), - the development of a genetic classification of meteorites (by clustering), - the classification of cholinergic agents according to their interaction with different receptors (by clustering), - the structure of a data set consisting of gaschromatographic profiles in samples collected in pollution monitoring stations (by factor analysis and pattern recognition), - factors determining GLC behaviour of solutes (by factor analysis and multiple regression), - the classification of olive oils according to geographic origin (by principal components and pattern recognition), - the diagnosis of thyroid status (by pattern recognition).

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The teaching potential for analytical chemistry of some mathematical and statistical tools is discussed. It is concluded that some of the so-called chemometric techniques should be taught and that they permit to develop a philosophy of problem solving in analytical chemistry.
