Notes: Abstract The unsteady flow of a viscous incompressible gas embedded with small spherical particles in a rectangular channel is studied. The flow is produced under the influence of an arbitrary time varying pressure gradient. The exact velocities of the gas and particles are obtained by operational methods. The change in velocity profiles of the gas and particles with time for a constant pressure gradient, have been drawn graphically. It is found that the velocities of the gas and particles are maximum in the central plane of the channel.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we have considered the unsteady motion of a spheroid moving from rest in viscoelastic fluid. The paper has been divided into two sections. In Section A a general formula as well as approximate formula for the drag has been calculated. In Section B the expression for the velocity of the spheroid started from rest under the action of constant force has been investigated.

Notes: Summary Sera from 98 melanoma patients and 90 normal donors were analyzed for antibody (Ab) to melanoma extracts, melanoma-associated antigen (Ag) and anticomplementary (Ac) activities by the microcomplement consumption technique. Sera were also tested for their ability to inhibit mitogen(phytohemagglutinin: PHA)-ininduced blastogenesis of normal lymphocytes. The results of the complement consumption assays were correlated with the results of inhibition of PHA-induced blastogenesis. Of 98 melanoma sera, 22% were Ab-positive, 30% were Ag-positive, and 44% were Ac-positive, in contrast to only 6% Ab-positive, no Ag-positive, and 7% Ac-positive in 90 normal sera. Fifty-nine percent of melanoma sera were inhibitory to PHA-induced blastogenesis, as against 12% of normal donors' sera. Ac-positive melanoma sera were significantly more inhibitory than Acnegative melanoma sera. The inhibitory activity of Acpositive sera was potentiated by the simultaneous presence of detectable Ag activity and was diminished by detectable Ab activity. Presence of Ab or Ag activity alone did not correlate with the inhibitory activity of the melanoma sera. Increasing incidence of Ac activity and ability to inhibit PHA-induced blastogenesis was observed with increasing tumor burden or advancing clinical stage. Sera from patients who displayed a delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity reaction to 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) were less inhibitory to PHA-induced blastogenesis than the sera from patients who did not respond to this contact allergen. Thus, Ac activity may be one of the circulating factors responsible for the immunosuppressive effect of cancer patients' sera.

Notes: Summary Extracts of both fresh tumor and tissue culture cells propagated from these tumors were compared in a lymphocyte stimulation assay. Tissue culture lines were grown in media containing 20% fetal calf serum (FCS) and in serum-free chemically defined medium. Melanoma-associated antigens were extracted by means of 3 M KCl. Melanoma-associated antigens from two tissue culture cell lines stimulated 3H-thymidine (3H-Tdr) incorporation in lymphocytes from 7 of 17 melanoma patients, whereas no stimulation was noted in response to extracts of isologous fresh surgical specimens. The antigen solubilized from tissue culture cells demonstrated tumor-associated specificity. Stimulated 3H-Tdr incorporation was noted in lymphocytes from 17 of 38 melanoma patients, 2 of 18 patients with other cancers, and 3 of 18 normal subjects. Extracts from both FCS-grown-and chemically defined medium-grown cells were stimulatory. Fetal calf serum was detected in extracts of FCS-grown cells by complement fixation, but was not present in stimulatory concentrations. IgG antibody was detected by immunodiffusion in the nonstimulatory extract of fresh tumor, but was not detected in the stimulatory tissue culture extracts or extracts of normal tissues from the same patient.

Notes: Summary A total of 739 sera from cancer patients, noncancer patients and normal donors were analyzed for anticomplementary (AC) activity by the complement consumption method. The results were correlated with clinical stage and tumor burden. The incidence of AC activity in cancer and noncancer patients' sera was 53% (233/439) and 67% (100/150), respectively, as against 14% (20/140) in normal donors' sera. Among cancer patients, this incidence was lowest (42%) for melanoma sera and highest (65%) for lung carcinoma sera. With the exception of sarcoma sera, the incidence of AC activity did not differ significantly with clinical Stages I, II, or III. Sera from Stages II and III sarcoma patients had a significantly higher incidence of AC activity (73% and 63%, respectively) than Stage I (38%). There appeared to be a higher incidence of AC activity in sera of cancer patients with 1–100 g tumor burden than in those from patients with tumors greater than 100 g or less than 1 g. Follow-up of cancer patients with no evidence of disease or minimal tumor burden revealed that 42% (18/43) whose sera were AC-positive had tumor recurrence within 3 months and 90% (57/63) whose sera were AC-negative had no detectable tumor recurrence up to at least 6 months after the serum analysis.

Notes: Summary Sera from 98 melanoma patients, 20 noncancer patients with immune complex-associated diseases, and 90 normal donors were analyzed for anticomplementary (AC) activity by the complement consumption method. Some of these sera were also tested for immune complex-like materials by the Raji cell radioimmune assay. In addition, serum samples from ten melanoma patients were analyzed serially to correlate the AC activity with clinical course. Significant levels of Ac activity were found in 45% of melanoma sera, 75% of nonmalignant immune complex-associated disease sera, and 10% of normal donors' sera. In some patients, AC activity decreased and became undetectable as their disease progressed. AC-negative serum samples taken from melanoma patients late in the course of disease when the tumor burden was large became anticomplementary when mixed with autologous or allogeneic serum samples taken earlier at the time of little or no tumor burden. The early serum samples contained antibodies against autologous tumor extracts, as shown by a complement fixation test. Absorption of early serum samples with cultured allogeneic melanoma cells reduced their ability to consume complement when mixed with autologous late serum samples, suggesting the presence of free antigen in the latter. The mixed samples of early and late sera and the sera positive in the complement consumption test contained heavy nonmonomeric IgG. Therefore, the AC activity of melanoma sera could be due to tumor-associated antigen-antibody complexes.

Notes: Abstract Seed treatment of Phaseolus mungo Roxb. with non-volatile metabolites of dominant seed fungi such as Chaetomium indicum Corda and Curvularia lunata (Walker) Boedijn and the antibiotic substances: chetomin, curvularin and brefeldin reduced the percent incidence of microfungi and bacteria but induced the Streptomyces sp. The antagonistic behaviour of seed microflora was assessed in vitro.

Notes: Summary The numerical results are obtained for heat transfer, skin-friction, and viscous interaction induced pressure for a step-wise accelerated flat plate in hypersonic flow. In the unified approach here the results are presented for both weak and strong-interaction problems without employing any linearization scheme. With the help of the numerical method used in this work an accurate prediction of wall shear can be made for the problems with plate velocity changes of 1% or larger. The obtained results indicate that the transient contribution to the induced pressure for helium is greater than that for air.

Notes: Summary Effects of human influences on the vegetation of the Western Himalaya have been reviewed. Impacts of forest management practices, over-grazing, surface mining, defence and development operations, and road building activities, are severe in the region. This has created an alarming situation for soil and water conservation. Increased soil loss and runoff pose a threat to various reservoirs built for various uses and have increased hazards of erosion and floods in the Indus and Ganga basin regions.
