    Selection for divergent lines of mice based on their performance in a T-maze (1973)

    Notes: Abstract Divergent selection for T-maze learning activity of mice was applied for five generations. Selection started in the F2 generation from a cross of two highly inbred lines (SWR and C57BL) and was based on an index which contained information from both individual and family performance. The overall heritability coefficient, estimated from intraclass coefficients for full sibs and adjusted for inbreeding, was low (h 2=0.13±0.04). This low heritability emphasizes the role of family performance for effective selection in such a behavioral pattern. The regression on trial order showed an increase of these estimates in the faster group (selected for shorter time performance) and a decrease in the slower group (selected for longer time performance). Learning rate and also the approach to the asymptote were more pronounced in the slower group. Selection based on the mean from ten trials affected the initial performances more than the final performances. This was especially true in the slower group. The differences between groups in the number of errorless approaches to the goal box were significant after three generations of divergent selection.
