    Notes: Abstract Laboratory studies on population growth and life table demography of Asplanchna girodi were conducted at 25±1 °c using Anuraeopsis fissa as prey at four (250, 500, 1000 and 2000 ind ml−1) densities. A prey density of 100 ind ml−1 per predator per day did not support A. girodi, while at the highest prey concentration, A. girodi reached a peak of 115±7 ind ml−1. The age distribution of A. girodi indicated that non-adults constituted about 2/3rd of the population at all prey concentrations. A decrease in prey availability resulted in increased mortality of non-adults. At the highest prey density, the rate of population increase (r) was 1.51 d−1. The significance of estimating mortality in population growth studies is discussed. Life table demography of A. girodi was also studied using the same prey at the same concentrations. None of the survivorship parameters (e.g. mean lifespan and mean survivorship) showed a significant relation to prey density. Net reproductive rate and generation time (but not rate of population increase) were affected by prey abundance.

    Notes: Abstract The present study describes a defined culturetechnique for the fairy shrimp, Streptocephalusdichotomus. It emphasizes reclamation of low-cost organiclive-stock waste(cow-dung), lime powder, and urea. These compounds wereused to enrich algal and diatom populations in themedium. These algae and diatoms were fed to filter feedingfairy shrimps to yield anostracanbiomass. A production of 262 ± 6 animals l−1was obtained in an experimental tank compared to 36 ± 4animals l−1 in the controls. Interestingly,the total number of clutches in experimentalfemales (12 ± 2), relative to the control (7 ± 1),increased too.

    Notes: Abstract We analyzed the effects of planktivorous Holeshestes heterodon Eigenmann (Characidae) predation on the plankton community of a small subtropical reservoir, using four enclosures (volume about 17.5 m3), open to the sediment, established in the littoral zone. Two enclosures were stocked with fish (mean TL 5.7 cm), at a density of about 4–5 fish m−3 (approx. 8 g m−3), whereas two remained fishless. The experiment lasted a little longer than one month. In the fish enclosures, most Crustacea and Chaoborus larvae remained scarce, probably as a result of visually selective fish predation. In both fishless enclosures, Chaoborus larvae became abundant. However, in only one of these did large individuals become relatively numerous; this discrepancy in the demographic structure of the Chaoborus populations between the two fishless enclosures is unexplained. Only in the fishless enclosure without appreciable numbers of large Chaoborus did densities of Crustacea increase greatly. It is suggested that in the enclosure containing large Chaoborus individuals, crustacean populations were prevented from developing due to predation pressure, while the small Chaoborus larvae of the other enclosure could not readily consume these prey. Rotifers were low in abundance in the absence of fish, probably as a consequence of Chaoborus predation. Phytoplankton density increased in all four enclosures, due probably to the lack of water flow. Only in the fishless enclosure with high densities of crustaceans did phytoplankton abundance decrease markedly at the end of the experiment, perhaps because of grazing losses.

    Notes: Abstract Four calanoid species found in Darfur, Western Sudan, all belong to previously known Nile Valley elements, but had not been reported from its Western sector. One species is morphologically characterized and given a new name. Another had been found on the East African Plateau and in the Chad basin only. It is now recorded from an intermediate locality as well.

    Notes: Abstract Two wetland complexes in the El Kala area, northeast Algeria, were sampled for zooplankton over a two-month period (mid-May to mid-July 1993). Some samples from 1976 and 1978 were also studied. A total of 98 taxa (51 species of Microcrustacea and 47 species of Rotifera) are recorded. Twenty-seven of these (26.5% overall) are new to Algeria and/or to the Maghreb and Africa. A significant fraction of Afrotropical species was found in all four groups, beside species of northern (European) origin, and at least one cyclopoid copepod with an Irano-Turanian range. These results confirm the El Kala wetlands as an important relict pocket of species of various historical and geographical origin, and highlight the urgency of safeguarding these sites.
