Notes: Abstract During the 12-year period between June 1987 and June 1999, 141 children underwent curative treatment for subglottic laryngeal stenosis at La Timone Children’s Hospital in Marseille, France. Ninety-six children (68%) were under the age of 5 years; 106 (75%) presented with acquired stenosis and 93 had narrowing involving over 70% of the subglottic lumen. Endoscopic laser surgery was performed in 25 cases and open surgery in 116. Open surgical techniques included laryngotracheoplasty with autologous cartilage interposition in 83 cases, laryngotracheal split in 22, and cricotracheal resection in 11. After decannulation, 132 children (94%) were able to breathe normally through the upper airway. Perspectives for development of new techniques and improvement of conventional methods are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The effects of dietary soya bean trypsin inhibitor (SBTI) and of the daily injection of pure CCK or porcine intedstinal extract have been studied on the rat pancreas. The following parameters were measured: weight, DNA, RNA, trypsin, chymotrypsin, amylase, lipase, insulin and glucagon. The effects of dietary SBTI on the level of gastrin in the antrum have also been studied. Oral SBTI and i.p. CCK caused similar hypertrophy and hyperplasia but not the same activities of the enzymes. It is suggested that SBTI stimulates the secretion of at least two gastro-intestinal hormones: CCK and gastrin.

Notes: Unilateral explants of rat adrenal medulla grown in the anterior chamber of the eye were studied with light and electron microscopy. The surviving chromaffin cells are in proximity to the abundant vessels at 21 days after explantation. However, the typical arrangement of anastomosed cellular cords, such as can be always seen in the normal medulla, is replaced here by clusters, cords and irregular groups of cells. Two types of chroma & cells can be described. The predominant cells are polygonal or elongated in shape and have polymorphous and elongated norepinephrine-positive granules. The other type, less numerous, has a pale cytoplasm with round chromafh cells. This type is norepinephrine negative. Several cytological characteristics of some of the chromaffin cells are also described. These morphological observations are in agreement with the biochemical findings previously published and confirm that a signscant decrease of epinephrine cells occurs in the explant.
