    Notes: Experimental measurements have been conducted of Knudsen diffusion through a model porous medium fabricated by the pelleting of monodisperse silica spheres. Tortuosity factors for this random-assemblage-of-spheres porous solid are calculated and compared with values obtained from both theory and measurements made in the bulk diffusion regime. Evidence is presented to support the use of a mean pore radius calculated as twice the ratio of pore volume to surface area, as opposed to values obtained from mercury porosimetry or sorption isotherm analysis.

    Notes: Solids distribution data for a three-phase, batch-fluidized slurry bubble column (SBC) are presented, using air as the gas phase, pure liquids and solutions as the liquid phase, and glass beads and carborundum catalyst powder as the solid phase. Solids distribution data for the three-phase SBC operated in a continuous mode of operation are also presented, using nitrogen as the gas phase, water as the liquid phase, and glass beads as the solid phase. A new model to provide a reasonable approach to predict solids concentration distributions for systems containing polydispersed solids is presented. The model is a modification of standard sedimentation-dispersion model published earlier. Empirical correlations for prediction of hindered settling velocity and solids dispersion coefficient for systems containing polydispersed solids are presented.A new method of evaluating critical gas velocity (CGV) from concentrations of the sample withdrawn at the same port of the SBC is presented. Also presented is a new mapping for CGV which separates the two regimes in the SBC, namely, incomplete fluidization and complete fluidization.

    Notes: Oligo d(C-A) and oligo d(T-G) of known average lengths, prepared by a combination of chemical and enzymatic procedures, have been mixed in 0.02 M and 0.07 M Na+, and absorbance has been studied as a function of increasing temperature. The transitions have been analyzed for the temperature of maximum slope Tm, the breadth of the transition, the value of the slope at Tm, and the maximum hyperchromicity. Linear expressions have been found relating the inverse of the length in nucleotide units (n-1) of the shorter oligomer, irrespective of its identity, to Tm and also to the transition breadth. From a difference in slope between the Tm versus n-1 expressions for the two molarities, the entropy and enthalpy of melting have been calculated as a function of n-1.

    Notes: Graft copolymerization of collagen with N,N,N′,N′-tetra (2-hydroxypropyl) ethylene diamine methacrylate (THPEDM) was carried out in an aqueous medium using potassium persulfate as the radical initiator. Collagen-g-poly(THPEDM) was characterized by the percent yield and the copper chloride test. The percentage of grafting was determined as functions of concentration of monomer, concentration initiator, reaction time, and temperature.

    Notes: Higher chained alkyl cyanoacrylates have potential to function efficiently as space filling, hydrophobic, viscoelastic, biocompatible, and rapidly polymerizing bone adhesives. Hence they may be useful in applications where a void has to be filled, such as replacement of the intervertebral disc. To assess their applicability as space filling material in such an pplication, three alkyl cyanoacrylates; methoxyethyl cyanoacrylate, isobutyl cyanoacrylate, and isoamyl cyanoacrylate have been evaluated in this study. The bonding strength of these cyanoacrylates to bone in a space filling situation have been measured. The results indicate the bond strength of isoamyl cyanoacrylate (0.13 MPa) to be significantly (p 〈 0.05) lower compared with methoxyethyl cyanoacrylate (0.33 MPa) and isobutyl cyanoacrylate (0.37 MPa). There was no significant difference in the bond strengths of isobutyl cyanoacrylate and methoxyethyl cyanoacrylate.

    Notes: Plasma-treated poly-p-xylylene films have been characterized by neutron activation oxygen analysis, internal reflection (IRS) and transmission infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and surface contact angle measurements. The results indicate that an oxygen plasma roughens the surface and that oxygen is incorporated into the surface. Oxygen is not detected in the bulk of the sample. The infrared transmission spectra exhibited no carbonyl band, but the relative band intensities changed, indicating a change in ring substitution by a loss of chlorine in the chlorinated poly-p-xylylenes. The IRS spectra of the surface of films treated with oxygen plasma did contain carbonyl bands at 1730 and 1640 cm-1. Argon and helium plasmas generally decreased the water contact angle measured on plasma-treated poly-p-xylylene surfaces more than oxygen or nitrogen plasma treatments. Regardless of the plasma utilized, the water contact angles increased with time after the treatment but did not recover to the original level. IRS spectra of the surface of films treated with argon plasma contained carbonyl bands at 1730 and 1695 cm-1. The adhesion of a polyurethane thermosetting material to a poly-p-xylylene surface is greatly improved if a plasma treatment is used prior to the application of the polyurethane. The degree of improvement in adhesion was dependent on the type of plasma and the treatment time.
