Notes: The solubility of water vapor in four different polyimides at 100% relative humidity and 22°C was measured by means of a quartz crystal microbalance system. The results confirm earlier conclusions that diffusion in these polymers is Fickian, and are sufficiently precise that the order of solubilities is unambiguous. The differences between the values are interpreted in terms of morphological variations rather than variations in chemical affinity for water. Diffusion coefficients are also reported.

Notes: Sorption of water vapor into thin films of a crosslinked dimethacrylate UV-cured polymer was measured by means of a quartz crystal microbalance apparatus. The diffusion coefficient and solubility were obtained. An upper limit to the water vapor diffusion coefficient, namely, the diffusion coefficient for liquid water in intimate contact with the sample, was measured for reference purposes by both gravimetric and infrared spectral techniques. A water uptake value for thick films was obtained gravimetrically as a reference for the thin film value. Measurement of the diffusion coefficient allows the determination of the length of time that the photopolymer could act as an effective water vapor barrier.

Notes: Infrared multiple photon decompositions (IRMPD) with more than one reactive pathway can provide significantly more kinetic information than can single-channel photolyses. The rates of the competing unimolecular reactions and the rate of photon absorption are interrelated, so that knowledge of one yields information about the others. The goals and pitfalls of IRMPD experiments on several well-studied classes of reactants are reviewed.
